I've noticed that the dot-url part of the file name does not show in Windows Explorer for web link files/shortcuts even though I have Explorer set to show the entire name, including extensions.

Why is this exception made in Windows Explorer to only this one extension?

How can I correct this?

How about that. Had the same types of odd things going on here also.
Firefox is my default but can get the icons to show up right.
Also a short like http://forums.techguy.org would show http://forums.techguy.org.url and you can not edit the name or any thing. It has happen 3 times and then it clears up. Icons are still screwed up even after picking firefox as the icons.

Wonder if the same type of trouble is going on that you have is what is going on here with me.

Nothing is "wrong". Not showing certain file extensions is by design. I just don't like it that way. I want to see all my file extensions.

I found it. It's not just a setting. It is a line in many places in the Windows Registry. Do a search in the Windows Registry for "NeverShowExt".

There's several extensions that don't show. Here's several and the registry key to find the NeverShowExt value
Document Shortcut (.SHB)
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DocShortcut]
Internet Shortcut (.URL)
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut]
File Shortcut (.LNK)
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]
DOS Shortcut (.PIF)
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile]
Explorer Command (.SCF)
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SHCmdFile]
Shell Scrap Object (.SHS)
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShellScrap]
