I have a win98 that is continuing to give me problems.

I have a HP usb scanner that worked before....

I upgraded my harddrive and at the same time removed an external USB hub that the scanner and other stuff was hooked up to. The scanner is now plugged directly into the PC's usb port.

I also had to upgraded the bios to support the bigger Hdrive.

Now, the scanner shows up in the device mgr as an "imaging device" and not under the USB hub as before. I also have a usb mouse that doesn't show up under a USB hub BUT it still works.

I have uninstall/reinstalled a couple of times. no joy.
I get error HP Program error msg 2117

ideas?

Tried the unlock, the reinstall and still get the same ERROR 2117.

I scanned some of the other USB problems on this forum and notice an IRQ question so here's mine:

0 System timer
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
2 Programmable interrupt controller
3 Communications Port (COM2)
4 Rockwell PCI Modem Enumerator
4 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
5 ESS Solo-1 PCI AudioDrive
5 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller
7 ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
8 System CMOS/real time clock
9 ALi PCI to USB Open Host Controller
9 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
9 SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus
10 NETGEAR FA311/FA312 PCI Adapter
10 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
11 (free)
12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port
13 Numeric data processor
14 ALi Primary IDE controller (Ultra DMA)
14 ALi Bus Master PCI to IDE Controller
15 ALi Secondary IDE controller (Ultra DMA)
15 ALi Bus Master PCI to IDE Controller

Don't what an ACPI IRQ Holder is, but seems like I got alot of 'em..
Also the PC seems really sluggish and getting worse.

In the device manager, is there a USB HUB entry? Also, what is showing under display adapter....it doesn't seem to be assigned an IRQ.....Any exclamation marks, red X's?

Those entries are for IRQ sharing...don't be concerned about them.

Under the device mgr:
USB controller
ALi PCI to USB open Host Controller
General Purpose USB Hub
USB Root Hub

FYI - I had an addon USB hub but removed it (at least the hardware).

I have a MS keyboard with a couple of USB ports which connects to the keyboard port and one of the two USB ports on the PC.

The Display Adapter is a Rage Pro Turbo AGP and has not fault indicator.

Also the MS mouse is plugged into the USB port on the Keyboard, and works fine.

Also, I have another PC (win XP) which I'm thinking of trying the scanner on to be sure I didn't fry it.

Any risk to the new PC?

Shouldn't be a problem on the other computer......either it's going to work or not.

What IRQ is being assigned to the display adapter?

I'm not sure how to get a IRQ for the display.

The device manager does not say. It has lots of hex for memory, etc but no IRQ...

That's strange, I'd try re-running the display driver setup.exe file.

First - if display seems to be working OK, do I really need to reload?

- My motto is "Better is the enemy of Good"

Second - if necessary, how?

And thirdly, the scanner is DEAD! No joy on the other PC either.

Thanks anyway for trying...
