Can one copy Linux directly to a Western Digital H/D without extra software, when doing a backup, and then retrieve it?
All that W/D says is that that will only provide the jumper settings and physical installation support. No mention of compatibility or possible operating conflicts.

A WD disk is just another hard disk. You can use it to accept any Linux regardless it is used as an interenal disk or as an externel disk via a USB. No different in application, especially if you are only interested as a backup.

Moving a Linux into an external hard disk and expect it to boot from there is another matter.
