I have a WD passport USB drive. It no longer shows up on my alienware laptop (running xp), but works perfectly on my desktop (running vista). It powers up on my laptop but does not show up in the disk manager, explorer, or on the my computer. I have tried everything I could think of to get this thing working but nothing has worked. The only thing I can narrow thw problem down to is when I installed a new USB cannon camera on my computer. The Drive worked fine before that, but does not work now. Other than that, I have no clue. Any help is appreciated.

Are you using an extra power lead??
Many Laptops are only just capable of supplying the 500mA through the USB port.

No I do not use the power cord. It worked fine for 6 months without it. I have a pretty hefty laptop (alienware) which should give it enough juice. I have another USB hard drive that works fine on it as well. It is just this one, and it stopped working after I hooked up my canon 20d camera. It still works on my desktop just fine.

I solved the problem. It was a bad USB cable. Sometimes the solution is the simplest thing.

Actually a faulty cable is often the LAST thing that we think about, even though it should be the first.

Funny Stuff, and here I was blaming my canon camera. I owe it an apology now. :D
