I purchased an external USB Storage device of 80 GB capacity (Sony). When I connect it to my laptop (HP Pavilion zt3000), it shows up in the tray. But when I check through "My Computer", there is no icon for the USB Hard disk for me to open and store data.

The response is same when I checked it in another laptop of HP.

Hardware Device Manager shows that the USB storage device is working properly and responds correctly for connection or disconnection!!

Can you advice what could be the problem and how to come out of this issue and start using the storage device?

Connect the external drive and turn it on before turning on the laptop. Give Windows a minute or 2 to "see" the drive. It eventually will. Once Windows installs the drive, you should be ok.
