Hi guys, I've got quite a problem.

My sister lives in London, England, and needed to upgrade her computer (she couldn't play "the Sims 2", obviously this is quite an emergency). I know enough about computers to install new hardware and fix many problems, but I live in Canada. Over the phone, I helped her install her new video card. After it was physically installed, she started the computer and went to install the drivers for it. She had just right clicked the CD-ROM drive to activate the auto-run, when her computer froze. After a quick restart, her CD-ROM drive has completely vanished (as far as the computer is concerned). It still has power, and will eject and spin up like normal. Also, I had her check the connections and they all seemed good. There is no sign of it on the device manager, and an add new hardware scan turned up nothing (except the new video card, which we can't install until we get the drivers off the CD). Can anybody think of anything else to try? Hopefully, something simple enough that I can walk her through it? She would like to avoid spending the 30 pounds an hour to have it repaired after buying her new video card.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

For an easy fix for winxp you can download xentweak, under misc it has a option to repair missing drives in xp so you can do it automatically.

OK, I'll have her download that program. She called a few minutes ago and said she tried logging on in a different user account, and the CD-ROM showed up. When she clicked on it, it went away. I'm not exactly sure what she meant by that, but she says it happens every few times she restarts the computer. Thanks for the help.
