My computer was running slow, hanging a lot in Windows Explorer where it would take forever to navigate folders or open and close programs. I downloaded and installed Spybot S&D, but during the registry backup, S&D hung up and I had to reboot my computer. I reinstalled S&D and ran it -- it found a few negligible things. Also installed and ran Anti-Malware and Super AntiSpyware. Still no big findings. But when Super Antispyware went to finish cleaning by rebooting, I got a blue screen registry error message: "STOP c0000218 Registry File Failure. Registry cannot load the hibe (file): \systemroot\system32\config\default or its log alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable."

I went to do a system restore, but found no restore points earlier than when I uninstalled S&D, even though I'd had several a few days ago (I have no idea where they went). I uninstalled S&D, though I know that wouldn't fix the problem. I got a second BSOD on the registry, this time \system32\components. I put the windows recovery/install disc in, and it just went back to the system restore point after the S&D uninstall. It seemed to work, but now I'm getting random BSOD errors (different from the registry kind). I can boot up, but no telling how long the computer will be stable. It doesn't seem to be as slow, anyway! LOL.

I have done fresh Vista installs before, so will go that route if I need to *sigh*. But I'm hoping something can be done to repair it.

Download BLUESCREENVIEW and install and run it to read the dump files created by windows.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

It seems to be finding only one file, is that right? And it seems like old information. I had a series of BSOD crashes before, but it was resolved when I made sure the hard drive was securely plugged in. Maybe it's not saving the dump files. I took a sreenshot of the list that seems to be affected, not sure if this is relevant.

The computer has been running fine for more than 24 hours... I am afraid to restart it, for fear it will bomb again. Anyway, I typed in MSConfig and accessed the Startup tab and searched on the entries you listed and unchecked them. I've been looking for a way to permanently disable startup programs, thanks for the tip! Should I uncheck them from Services, too, or just Startup?

    Here are my toolbox results:

I just ran TFC by OldTimer and it restarted without a hitch. I'm hoping that will continue! Thanks for your help so far with cleanup.

Hit the start button in lower left hand corner. Then in the run box type msconfig, then hit the services tab then put a check mark in hide microsoft services what is listed there, after hiding microsoft services? Please post back to us in a vertical list.

Also just untick the startup entries in msconfig the above will tell me how to advise you on the services.

    Uninstall the programs listed below.
    Java(TM) 6 Update 22 (Version: 6.0.220) (outdated)
    BitTorrentBar Toolbar (Version: 6.6.0.19) (unneeded)
HiJackThis (Version: 1.0.0) (outdated) Newest copy of HJT FoundHere

Would you please tell me which antivirus applications you have had previously on this machine any and all.The reason I ask is because some like to hang around after you uninstall via add remove programs and require the use of removal tools. :)

I would also like you to open an elevated command prompt and type sfc /scannow
When finished with that I would like you to type chkdsk /r also in an elevated command prompt.

Computer hung up twice again this morning in Windows explorer, necessitating restarts.

Attached are the non-MS services I had running. I have unchecked them all (haven't restarted yet).

    I removed those three programs.

Antivirus programs: I currently use MS Security Essentials. I just installed Super Antispyware, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and Spybot S&D, though I removed Spybot S&D when I had issues.

McAfee Security Scan Plus ended up on my computer recently, piggybacking on something else, and I haven't yet removed it.

In the past, I used AVG Free, avast!, and I tried Kapersky briefly.

I opened the command prompt using cmd in the start window -- did it have to be in the root C:\ directory? I left it in users\administrator.

sfc /scannow found no integrity violations (yay!). Ran checkdisk, too.

Do you recommend programs like Revo Uninstaller for uninstalling programs?

1.Re open the services tab please and put a check mark next to all of them except Mcafee

2.Then hit start button at lower left hand corner of the screen. Then in the run box type services.msc right click Run As Admin. Find the service listed below, one at a time. left click it once you should have the option to either stop the service or restart it , stop the service then right click selected service select properties then change the startup type to manual then left click apply and move on to the next service. If the service is stopped and the startup type is manual then do nothing.
    Adobe Acrobat Update Service
    Amazon Download Agent
    EpsonBidirectional Service
    Seagate Scheduler2 Service
    Steam Client Service
    Nvidia Update Service Daemon

    3.Uninstall the program below.
McAfee Security Scan Plus (Version: 2.0.181.2) (probably came with another download)

    4.Run these uninstaller applications please.

    AvgRemovalTool

    Reboot.

    Download AvastUninstallUtility on your desktop
Start Windows in Safe Mode Open (execute) the uninstall utility
If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
    Click REMOVE
    Restart your computer

    KasperskyRemovalTool

    Reboot.

Save each of these to your desktop. The only one you need to run in safe mode is avast removal tool.If you have problems with instructions skip avast removal tool but I suggest the use of both kaspersky and avg removal tools. Also I do not use revo uninstaller so I cant advise. :)
Please tell me how your machine is responding now. :)

Thanks, Jacob. I ran them all. So far, things are working great. I'll repost if something acts up again, but I haven't had a blue screen for two days, and the reboots ran without a hitch (no missing registry warnings).

I was gone for two days, and today received another BSOD. I ran BlueScreenView but get the same report as before. Yesterday I had issues with email and instructions to run Check Disk. The computer hung up shortly after and rebooted after running check disk. It found some empty areas marked as having data and fixed them (or the index, I guess.) But then the BSOD this morning.

Thanks. I cleaned and reseated the components, and ran sfc (does it generate a report? I came back and it was back to Windows.) Over the past two weeks, it's randomly restarted twice and gone to BSOD once. Otherwise not too bad. Can Firefox cause such issues? I ask because the only program I'm using when this happens is Firefox -- I haven't had it happen in the middle of anything else. But maybe that's farfetched?
