Hello, I'm new here and I need some help, obviously. I recently went back to using my desktop PC after getting home from college. It was being used by my mom for about 6 months and there wasn't this many problems before I lent it to her.

The main things that bug me is the speed of the computer, the speed of the internet (which may not be a fault of the computer) and the ram. Firstly, the computer is fine after a reboot but it quickly gets laggy when I try to open programs and stuff. I think it goes hand-in-hand with the RAM problem. I have 768MB of RAM and it quickly gets used up. I dunno if this is supposed to happen so quickly... I don't remember it doing it before. I use a program called RAM Clean and it gets it around 500-600 usually, but after a little while it goes down and usually is around 100-200. As for the internet speed, I was on AT&T DSL for a while but recently went back to Road Runner... and there's not much of a speed difference. I used to use RR and it was MUCH faster. So either they slowed it down, or my computer is stupid.

Oh, I also randomly get these survey things pop-up in an IE window (and I use Firefox, so they're not pop-ups from a site... as far as I know.) I don't know if they do anything, but they're annoying.

I've run Spybot and AdAware, but they didn't help. I thought about reinstalling Windows to get rid of everything, but I can't find my disks... so I turn to you people.

Here's the HiJackThis log:

I would do a disk cleanup, disk error check and a disk defrag. And then go to msconfig to see how many programs are running in the background. Uncheck the boxes of the programs you don't need. Norton Security Suite can also slow you down. It uses a lot of system resources. A switch to NOD32 Antivirus will speed up your current computer. Spybot and AdAware don't catch much these days. Spyware Terminator will give much better results. Get the pop- up blocker extension for Firefox or use the Opera browser or at least IE7.

Make sure you have all the latest updates for Windows.
It sounds like you're heavily loaded with spyware and probably a good share of viruses. I would reinstall Windows. If you have a CD key, you can borrow a Windows CD and use your key during installation.
768 MB RAM is enough to run any version of Windows with ease, when you aren't bogged down with viruses/malware/etc.
If you really want to stick with your current Windows installation, there are more anti-spyware/adware/malware/virus programs out there free of charge. Windows Defender is worth a try. AVG and Avast put out free versions of their anti-virus applications. Try googling "free antispyware" and "free antivirus". Good luck!

Hi Emolicious

Welcome to TSG! :)

Before we begin to try any manual cleaning, please do the following:

* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, click on the "Save Report" button an save the results of the scan to your desktop.

Note: You have to use Internet Explorer to do the online scan. Also leave the pc alone during the scan. Don't surf the net or run any programs. Just let the scan run.

  • Open HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click the Save List button.
  • After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file.
  • Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad.
  • Copy and paste that list in your next reply to this thread.

I haven't done the scan yet, but uh... I was checking out that uninstall manager thing and it doesn't list a lot. So I went to Add/Remove programs and a whole bunch of listings that used to be there are gone now, but the programs are still there. I think I borked something up somewhere...
