Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 32 bit
Processor: AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology MK-36, x64 Family 15 Model 76 Stepping 2
Processor Count: 1
RAM: 1982 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150, 64 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 152524 MB, Free - 130981 MB;
Motherboard: Quanta, 30B7
Antivirus: None

I'd had the motherboard AND the hard drive replaced. Maybe a month or two later, the first problem that appeared was the startup. It occasionally gets stuck in the Windows logo, pulsing on and off. I have to force it to turn off and then go through a system thing that starts in black and white (forget the name of that). I can get in afterwards but it can take an hour, sometimes less, sometimes more. That's one problem. I think I'll stop there for now. I'm not savvy but not a total illiterate. Hope I can do this via TechGuy, 'cause I don't want to spend $150.

Thank you for your help.

Hi marina_p,

There are a few fundamental problems with this machine.
1) It has a single core processor. That makes it not very fast.
2) It has only 64Mb graphics card. That makes it slow loading websites.
3) It has no antivirus. That is a disaster. Your machine is a sitting duck for infections.

Tell me: Is this a laptop or desktop?

Before we do anything else, we have to get an antivirus on there.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download the Microsoft Security Essentials Installer
The download is here: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
Choose "Save As" and Save it to your desktop. Make sure you can find it.

Install Microsoft Security Essentials
Double Click the icon for the Microsoft Security Essentials installer.
Let it install, update itself, run a FULL scan and delete anything it finds.

  • Tell me about the desktop/laptop thing, and any model number, if you know it.
  • Tell me if you were successful in downloading and running MS Security Essentials.

Hello Askey127,

My computer is being scanned for viruses as I write. I will complete the process and then I have to leave. This is a laptop and I must get underneath to get the model #. I will try to get back to you from my next location, but last time I tried to get on the wifi there, it didn't work. I assume it's due to the condition of my computer right now. I'll be there, maybe, until Tuesday, so I'm not sure when I can get back to you. But I certainly will get back to you.

Thanks again for your help. Until next time.

Hello
I'm on my friend's computer. After installing Microsoft Security Essentials, the next time I turned on my computer it became very hard to open anything. I'm in the process of uninstalling Essentials. I realized after I installed it, that I have AVG that is paid for for the year. Maybe I should call AVG? I'm confused. Isn't AVG an anti-virus? It was my friend who said that if I have AVG, another anti-virus program will take up a lot of memory (RAM?) and slow down my computer, which is what happened.
What do you think? Not sure when I'll be on next.
Thanks,
Marina

Yes, that is likely what happened. You should never allow two antivirus programs at the same time.
If you are certain you have AVG, you can leave it.
I instructed you as I did because your machine shows NO antivirus in the system utility log you posted.
AVG is not my favorite, but we will deal with it.

If you uninstall MS security Essentials, open AVG and have it run a full scan. Let it remove anything it wants.
Then get back to me and we will do what's next.

I ran the scan and looked at the AVG folder marked "function". I didn't see anything that said anti-virus. The name of the AVG program is "PC Tuneup 2015" DOES this AVG have an anti-virus?

No.
Back to installing Microsoft Security Essentials and running a scan with it.
Maybe not second-guessing what I am asking.

So what slowed my computer down so much that I could barely use it? Will I be able to run a scan under those conditions?

marina,
Since I don't know what was going on exactly, I can't identify the last straw.
I'm ready to fix your machine, if you have Microsoft Security Essentials installed again.
We will make your machine faster.
A few things to do here. Just take one step at a time. I will respond quickly.
---------------------------------------------
Before We Start, Some Notes On This Process
During this repair, we may need to remove some obsolete programs, and some which interfere with our tools.
If that is the case, we will install replacements later.
Please do not install, uninstall, delete or scan with anything, unless I ask, until we are through fixing the machine.
Please use Notepad to paste all the requested log replies. Notepad's Format >Wordwrap should be turned OFF (unchecked).

-------------------------------------------------------
IF You Don't Have Firefox, get it here and install it : http://www.getfirefox.net/
During the installation you can likely import settings from Internet Explorer if you wish.

---------------------------------------------------------
Set Firefox as Default and Always Ask Where to Save Downloads
Open Firefox, then hit the Alt key if necessary, so you can see the menu bar at the top.
In the top menu bar, click on Tools, and select Options.
In the new dialog window that pops up:
Click on the General icon in the top bar, and click the radiobutton labeled "Always ask me where to save files"
Click on the Advanced icon in the top bar.
Click the radiobutton labeled, "Always check to see if Firefox is the Default browser on startup."
Click OK.

----------------------------------------------
Download and Run Temp File Cleaner (TFC.exe)
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
You might want to Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs... including your browser!
Right click the TFC icon and choose Run as administrator.
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, it will report the total size of files removed. If it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
You can keep TFC on your desktop and run it every week or two to clean out excessive temporary files. It does usually require a restart.

-----------------------------------------------
Please download MiniToolBox and run it.
Double click MiniToolBox.exe to launch the program.
Checkmark Only the following boxes in the list:
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Restore Points
Click Go to start the scan.[/list]
When finished a log Result.txt will open.
Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

If you run into an item you can't do, let me know.

Okay, I'm back. Are there any other choices for an anti-virus besides Microsoft? I don't like their participation in the surveillance of the American people.

All the other free ones have adware toolbars.
Microsoft doesn't do that.
If you don't like surveillance, you might consider getting off the Internet altogether.

Of the paid antivirus programs, ESET NOD32 is probably the best.

If my instructions are not satisfactory, let me know and I will see if someone else would be willing to assist

Marina,
There are Really good reasons for the things I ask you to do, even if they don't appear to make sense.
I don't share all the reasons, because it would take a long time (both yours and mine) and a lot of words.
I have been working hard on this subject for almost ten years, and you need to temporarily trust me to do a good job for you.
After we are through, if you want to do more research, or trust friends, and make changes, then OK; it's your machine.
I am trying to do things that will work best on your very limited set of hardware.
We can't afford many mistakes on "resources used".
I am also limiting the number of items I give you at once, until I see whether you can successfully do a set of them in sequence.

Does that help to improve your understanding of my objectives and instructions here?

Askey127,
Thanks for your concern, but there's no need to explain. I understand.
I have proceeded with your instructions and here is the result:
