Hi I have just read about tweaking the vcache settings to avoid stuttering in games. However when following the instructions I could find no mention of vcache in the "C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI" window. Does this not apply to XP or am I just an idiot?

Microsoft addressed this problem in XP.

    Studders & blinks:

A good way to stop them is to have 2 hard drives. When you're playing a game, your single HD is playing the game AND trying to write to your virtual memory at the same time. For a split second it stops writing to one, to write to the other causing your game to studder.

Putting your games on one HD and your virtual memory on the other will allow both to be written at the same time, thus, eliminating the hesitations.
