    Hi folks:
I found your site in search of help to try and eliminate the Backdoor Virkel.b problem. I found some excellent information and tried to fix with suggestions you were making for another chap. But I did not follow exactly. AVG discovered the problem but could not eliminate completely. I have multiple user settings and the problem just kept expanding until AVG was able to catch with it and put it into the vault and then deleted by me. I was not sure if the problem was fixed or not I started making queries and downloading software. I began with Trend Micro which required the removal of AVG. This scan picked up other spy ware which I fixed with Trend Micro and then un-installed same. I then installed kaspersky and ran a scan and discovered 7 more serious threats which KAS. fixed. I went into safe mode and re-scanned for each user setting and I then ran ccleaner. I rebooted into normal mode and attempted to reinstall AVG and received the following error.
    Local machine: installation failed
    Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgclean.sys: starting service....
The dependency service or group failed to start. (1068
and now my PC is rebooting itself as I write, any input will be appreciated thanks in advance

Please Download MsnVirRem.exe to your desktop from one of the following sites
    • First close any other programs you have running as this will require
      a reboot.
    • Double click MsnVirRem.exe to run it.
    • Once open, click the button labelled "Search
      and Destroy
      ".
<<Your computer will now be scanned for Infected Files>>
    • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if
      infected, Click OK.
    • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
    • After the Reboot, you WILL receive file not found errors (usually 4)
      please acknowledge them and continue.
    • A Message should popup from MsnVirRem. If not,
double click the program again and it will finish.
    Please Post the contents of
C:\msnvirrem.log along with a fresh HijackThis log

Hi: Niece cat I have one identical
I followed your instructions I was not able to get a copy of problems identified by msnvirrem. I was reading them a total of 7 and attempted to copy all but I could only get one at a time so I left them and just continued with your instructions. Program finished and I scanned again and was advised problems corrected. I have attached a fresh log of Hijackthis
question -- Should I run this scan for each user setting on my PC?
    Are their more actions required?

    WHAT??? Mine is missing! ;)

I would run MsnVirRem.exe in each profile and yes please post a log from each profile and name them user1, user2 etc in case each one needs something different.

    Also...
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Please move hijackthis.exe into a permanent folder.

To create a permanent folder click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar click on File, New, Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder.
Put your HijackThis.exe into that folder.

Hi: Thanks for your prompt responce, I have followed your instructions as per post. The log for MSNVIREM. I am sorry but I do not know how to get this log for a post. I have ran the program twice for each user setting (5 users) after the initial scan. All later scans are reporting no infections found. How to get a log of these scans???. The initial scan found I believe about seven concerns identified as TROJANS GENERIC. I recall one was in start up, another in registry another I think it said it was in security. I am sorry I was not able to get that log and post for your review. If there is any other way I can get this to you please advise. Kas. is running and after a self update it reported a trojan in a Kazaz file. there was no fix available by Kaspersky so I deleted the file. Since I have been trying to fix this problem my PC on boot up is reporting missing files that affect how programs will or will not run. Example I have tried at least a dozen times to reinstall AVG anti virus and I get the same, error 1068 message. I had Sygate running for a firewall and had to turn it off when I installed the trial version of Trend Micro Chip. Sygate will no longer run after Trend Micro Chip program was installed and removed. I think I may have to put my XP cd in and do a repair installation???
Here is the latest HJT result after new java installation.

I see AVG and Kaspersky anti-virus running so you need to remove one of them.

Download the Hoster and unzip it to your desktop.
    www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip

    Next, open the Hoster
Make sure that you see "Your hosts file is editable" if not click the button in the upper right corner
Now, click on 'back up Host files'
then click on 'Restore Microsoft's orginal host files'
    Finally, close the hoster

Please move hijackthis.exe into a permanent folder.

To create a permanent folder click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar click on File, New, Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder.
Put your HijackThis.exe into that folder and post another log.

Hi: Thanks for the info. I followed your instructions and attached results of new HJT scan at end of message. Hoser, I ran program and could not tell if it actually did anything. I ran registry repair and deleted invalid paths. and rebooted system. I tried to re install avg anti virus still (1068) and sygate still can not start. HJT results:

I think that registry *repair* program is messing things up. I don't use or recommend using them.

Go to add/remove programs and remove AVG and Kaspersky as they don't appear to be running correctly.

Reboot the computer and try reinstalling one of the AV programs, but not both.
