My desktop computer was not connecting to the internet even though there was a connection. I ran a diagnostic test and it said that my default IP gateway, DCHP server and DNS server all failed. I don't know how to fix this problem so I did several things. I did an ipconfig release/renew in the cmd promt, I manually typed in my ip address, subnet mask and default gateway and i erased and added the same wireless connection and still nothing happened. Then I logged into my router on another computer and changed the data encryption from WPA to WEP so I can get on the internet with my laptop since my laptop did not support WPA encryption and walla I was able to connect to the internet on my desktop. I am not sure how changing the encryption from WPA to WEP has anything to do with a failure from my DNS and DCHP server and default IP gaeway. Can someone explain so I can understand this?

With respect to your first post you probably did not really have a connection to the router--not one with communication. If I'm right an ipconfig /all would have shown an IP of 169.254.x.y and not Default Gateway or Dhcp or DNS server. When you changed the encryption you probably entered the correct WEP key and got a connection. (Please notice the use of "probably" a couple times in this explanation.)

Please show for when you have internet access and for when you do not ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

    Type the following command:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I did Have internet connection. I did ipconfig in the cmd prompt and it showed an IP address but it said the DCHP server wasn't enabled. After I changed the encryption to WEP I was surfing the net for at least 5 minutes before it cut off. Then I just disabled the connection and reconnected and it worked again for about 5 minutes????? Now it doesnt say anything. Here is the info:

Make sure you have the latest driver for the wireless adapter.

    (From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2 or SP3.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

    Reboot the machine.

If you already had the latest wireless driver use Device Manager to uninstall it; reboot and let Windows discover the adapter and reinstall it.

How does an ethernet connection behave?

What, if any, non-Windows firewall or security suite is installed? Or used to be installed?

once again that did not solve the problem. I also reset winsock and tcp/ip and it only worked for like 10 minutes and then the internet cut out. Its like it loses its connection for whatever reason then can't access it again. If I restart my computer the internet will work then it will cut out. It doesn't make any sense. I ran a few virus scans and there were no viruses corrupting my computer. I reset my wireless driver and nothing???????????
