ok im new to vb, have done a big long tutorial thing to get the basics, but what i need is a way to specifically refer to the root directory of the windows installation, in case its not the c drive, i will be searching for the existance of several folders there, and if they dont exist, creating them.

Windows has a function called GetWindowsDirectory that will return the full path to the windows installation directory. I don't know how to access this in VB but perhaps this will be a starting point for you.

Alternatively, there are environment variables that contain this information. One is called "windir" and Google shows another one called "SystemRoot". You should be able to look these up using Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable
