As from a few days ago, the bootup speed of my PC has suddenly slowed to a crawl. it takes about 6 minutes for the bootup now, whereas before it had taken about 2 minutes.

I tried bootvis but it is not working properly and keeps coming up with errors.

Are there any other utilities that can test for bootup speed or what goes on during bootup so I can try to diagnose this? Or any ideas on what it might be?

Thanks,

Jon

Have you recently installed any new software?
Have you run a anti-virus/anti-spyware scan? (just in case)

It is difficult for me to diagnose what has been installed or not as I have been installing and deleting stuff for ages and did not boot my PC for several days.

I have recently installed Microsoft's beta version of their anti-spyware and it came up with a couple of enties that have been deleted. The virus checker is run every day at about 4am and there is nothing there either.

I definitely agree with the above comment. However, is it also slow after you boot up, or are things relatively normal then?

For example, are programs very slow to open?

I have managed to get bootvis working now. Attached is a file of my bootup times and what processes are run.

Can someone please take a peak and advise me on what they think is going on?

Thanks,

Jon

Programs are at normal speed after bootup. When I look at the chart, there seems to be loads of stuff for avg7rsw.sys which I presume is my antivirus software. It seems to run for ages, even during the bootup phase (+48 seconds).

If you want to take the time, you can do some "clean boot" troubleshooting. Essentiall this means HIDING all Microsoft services -- and then disabling all NON Microsoft services and startups.

Then you re-enable them a few at a time. For AVG, identify all its service snd start tab startups -- and do those all at once to test. I don't think AVG is a problem as I have it and it does not add much to startup.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310353

If you disable your ZA firewall, make sure you have the XP firewall enabled as a substitute.

You have MANY programs starting that really don't need to be there. They can be run from shortcuts when you want them.
