My parents bought a Compaq Presario laptop a few months ago and ever since we got it, it's been extremely slow. It's got Windows XP on it and after we click on whichever name we want to log on as, it literally can take up to about 7 minutes {if not longer} until it actually loads the desktop and everything. That's right, I kept track of time. Then, if we want to get on the internet {we have roadrunner} it takes even more time. I usually just sit there and watch a T.V. show while I wait for the home website to finally pop up.

I've tried a couple of things that I do to my own computer to make it faster, like going to msconfig and making sure the Startup List is unchecked. I also deleted those unnecessary things under IE-Tools-Internet Options like temporary internet files, cookies, history, etc. That makes my computer work better but when I try it on the laptop, it doesn't do a thing. It's still the exact same slow speed. I do have a Windows 2000 on my own computer and I've never worked with XP before so I don't know if there's a big difference there or what.

If anyone has had this problem or has any ideas on how to speed it up, that would be super!
    Thank you!

I tried download HijackThis but when it was done loading, I didn't know what to do so I clicked unzip file and nothing happened; the little screen was still there saying "unzip file, run winzip, close, help, etc." I don't have Winzip, I'm not sure what it is, but how do I get past the unzip file thing?

The file I pointed you to was a self-installing file, you just double click it.

I'm sorry but when I double-clicked on your website, it opened up http://www.majorgeeks.com/HijackThis_d3155.html, not any self-installing thing. It had like five different places for me to download HijackThis from. I just picked one and that's when it started downloading and the unzip file deal started. Could you go on there and maybe show me where to click?

It seems like a lot of stuff and we don't use this computer for much besides the internet. Anything I can get rid of?

From my own experience with Norton/Symantec, it is a resource hog. You have a lot of Norton/Symantec stuff on there. Perhaps that is your problem. Of course, wait and see what the experts tell you, in case there is something else going on. There are some very good, free, anti-virus and anti-spyware programs out there.

If Norton is such a hog, can someone tell me how to fix it in HijackThis or wherever? I'll update java but how do I get rid of Norton or minimize its effect? I'm not a professional so I don't want to crash my computer.

Is there some reason when you are talking about a pc being slow, you have mentioned no hardware? What is the ram, cpu I mean that is where we usually start!
