    1. Is AVG the paid for version or the free version

    2. You also appear to have

    C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Client Server Security Agent
which is a legacy product from Trend Micro originally designed for business use

    http://esupport.trendmicro.com/Page...rity-Server-and-ClientServer-Security-Ag.aspx

    3. The computer will be slow as you have AVG and Trend Micro conflicting with each other

    4. The uninstall of Trend Micro could prove difficult as do so will likely require the Trend Micro password

    5. How long have you had the computer, what security software have you installed

    6. You have many items running on startup which are unnecessary
    go msconfig

click startup tab and uncheck all items except AVG - your antivirus, click apply and ok
restart and then check the small box
do not show this message again

    to get to there type
    msconfig
in search box on windows button
when it appears above right click and click run as admin

    7. At this time deal only with the startup items and when we know what security you have installed and if it is the paid for or free AVG AND if you have or can obtain the password for the Trend Micro we can proceed

Download and save the TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe) to the desktop.

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE text here.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Does yours have the small form factor or desktop or minitower case?

All 3 case sizes support up to 16 GB of DDR3 RAM.

Let's see what the startup and services lists look like so we can determine what can be unchecked and changed to Manual.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start, then type MSCONFIG in the search or run box, then press the Enter key.

When the small "System Configuration" window appears, click the "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start, then type SERVICES.MSC in the search or run box, then press the Enter key.

When the "Services" window appears, expand it so you can see the list more clearly.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Name" column that have their startup type set on Automatic / Automatic(Delayed Start).

If the "Name" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list and in alphabetical order.

Make sure to spell them correctly.

Do the following in the order that they're listed.

    -------------------------------------------------

Remove the checkmark in these startup entries:

    Adobe Acrobat

AcroTray Adobe Acrobat Distiller Helper Application

    Adobe Reader And Acrobat Manager

    Adobe CS6 Service Manager

    HPWuSchd Application

    Adobe CS5 Service Manager

    Adobe Updater Start Up Utility

    Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security

    CCleaner

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart.

    -------------------------------------------------

Double-click these service entries, one at a time, to open its properties window, then change "Startup Type" to Manual, then click Apply:

    Adobe Flash Player Update Service

    Distributed Link Tracking Client

    FLEXnet Licensing Service

    Google Update Service

    Google Software Updater

    Microsoft.Net Framework NGEN v4.0.30319_x86

    Mozilla Maintenance Service

    NVIDIA Display Driver Service

    NVIDIA Stereoscopic 3D Driver Service

    NVIDIA Update Service

    Offline Files

    RoxMediaDB12OEM

    Roxio Hard Drive Watcher 12

    Skype Updater

    SwitchBoard

    TeamViewer 7

    vToolbar Updater15.3.0

    vToolbar Updater18.3.0

Windows Live ID sign in Assistant

Note: Change "Startup Type" in ALL Trend Micro-related entries to Disabled.

After you're done, close the services window and restart the computer.

    -------------------------------------------------

After the computer settles down from the restart, use it for awhile.

Make sure everything is still working okay, and see if speed and "snappiness" has improved.

The AVG antivirus program in that computer is very outdated.

It either needs to be upgraded to its current version or it needs to be completely removed and replaced with another antivirus program.

I'm not familiar with the Trend Micro security suite in that computer, so I can't comment on it.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

When you inherit a computer that still contains all the programs and "debris" from its previous owner, you can expect to have problems with it.

It's usually best to do a clean reinstall of the windows operating system and get a fresh start with it

I fully agree - as I said on my first reply

However I must concur with my good colleague Flavallee - the best way forward is to start again with a fresh install

I have followed Frank's instructions, you have helped me in the past.In view of your comments concerning AVG I have tried to download and install the 2015 AVG free edition but have been unsuccessful. In trying to install I get a message saying Internet connectivity required (I am connected to the Internet) it also says if using proxy server specify the setings. I hve absolutely no idea what this means.could you possibly explain.
I am truly grateful to both off you for your input

Personally, I would NOT upgrade AVG because it's gotten too bloated and can be problematic.

I would uninstall the old version, then use AVG Remover to remove its leftover "debris", then install a light-weight user-friendly antivirus program, such as Microsoft Security Essentials.

    --------------------------------------------------------

Macboatmaster will need to help you get rid of that Trend Micro security suite because I'm not familiar with it.

I would willingly if I knew but the only knowledge I have of that Trend Micro and its uninstall is as shown on the link I sent when I first replied

With all the outdated and useless programs and all the debris that's in it, I fear you're going to have one problem after another with that computer,

If you live in the U.S.A., my advice is to go here and purchase the Windows 7 Professional 32-bit restore disc kit for it.

If you decide to get a fresh and clean start with it, you'll have what you need.
