Have a Dell Inspiron 1100 running WinXP. Had problems with virus and think I got them all removed. However.
Now when I boot up, it takes a long time. Then the icons appear, but before I can click on one or a listed program, the icons disappear and only the background is on the screen. After between 10 and 20 seconds the icons show again and then they disappear again after 5-10 seconds. This repeats four or five times then only the backgroud is on the screen.
The same thing happens if I start in safe mode. The only thing I seem to be able to run is task manage by control.alternate,delete.
So I can't do a system restore or run any program.
Have tried to reinstall XP, but it does not read the CD. tho it starts to spin then stops after 5-10 seconds.
Are there any suggestions as to what's going on, or what the problem may be?

I have seen this problem caused by Malware....

I would recommend that you post a HJT log, HERE

Please be patient as the malware removal experts are short:-handed. :(
