    Hi,

My computer is running very slowly lately and I have no idea why. I have run the AVG virus scan (clean), AVG anti-spyware scan (clean), have used CC cleaner (done), uninstalled all games and their exe files - and still no improvement. I have Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 (Service Pack 3). I am getting no error messages, but I cannot play any videos from the internet, for example, without them getting stuck and being very slow (this had not happened before). The system is starting up very slowly and it takes ages before a program is opened. I cannot detect any exact moment from which on this has been happening (am not aware of downloading any unsecure file). I have checked the anneandtrevor thread where you advice to put up the uninstall list, so I am adding this right away to my hijackthis log. Thanks very much for all your help.

    Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove Logitech Desktop Messenger

It is not a required program and is not functioning correctly.

Restart the machine and post your log again.

    Hi Cybertech,

Thanks so much for getting back to me! Removed Logitech Desktop Messenger as you suggested but I am afraid no improvement so far :(. Start-up takes forever as usual, even writing this message gets very jerky. Plus I started (app. 2 days ago) to get a nonsensical initial message: "New HW found on PCI concentrator" while I have not installed anything, nor is anything connected to my computer - have done no changes to my HW . Anyway, here is my new log:

Click Start - Run - and type in:

    services.msc

    Click OK.

    In the services window find:

    iWinGamesInstaller

Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.
    Exit the Services utility.

Note: You may get an error here when trying to access the properties of the service. If you do get an error, just select the service and look there in the top left of the main service window and click "Stop" to stop the service. If that gives an error or it is already stopped, just skip this step and proceed with the rest.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. alternate link 1 alternate link 2
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I'm not able to help with the PCI error but let's make sure there is no malware and then I'll have you post the error message in the Hardware forum.

    Hi Cybertech,

Thank you so much for getting back to me again this quick and for all your hints. I have done all actions suggested and it does seem to help. No errors popped up during scans and I have not been asked to reboot - I might do so, though, to see if the system start-up gets any quicker and if the message still pops up.
Anyway, really grateful for your help, here are my logs:

As to iWin - that seemed trouble from the very beginning. I had disabled it from somewhere else (can't recall where from) before, uninstalled, deleted all files I could trace. Surprised it was still there!

Hi, just to update the status - temporary improvement failed today, start-up longer than ever, any program starting up ever so slow :( Can't even use skype as the sound is sooo jerky! This never happened before. Tried defragmentation, no help. I am a professional translator, so I just keep a word document and one dictionary open (the indispensable programs) but even so letteres appear soo stutteringly! Have no idea what to do next :(
However, thanks for all the help so far, hope we can solve this together.

I don't see this being a malware problem. I think you should consider getting some more ram for the machine.

    Hi Cybertech,
Thanks for getting back to me and for your suggestion. It does make sense, however - pardon my stupid question, I admit computers are the last thing I understand  - I have been using pretty much the same programs and all SW ever since I bought the crappy thing. Why this drammatical slowdown now? I have not installed any SW, let alone a demanding one, lately. So I just don't get it...

Moreover, quite paradoxically right after having read your message yesterday, an error message popped up reading "Windows does not have enough of virtual memory and may cause some programs not to function properly" (as if I hadn't noticed...). Sorry, it might not be word for word, have to translate from Czech; well, is that what you're saying?

Sorry to still bother you, will be glad if you answer!

    Thanks so much,
    Klara

Right click on my computer and select properties. What does processor say and how much ram does it show?

Under the Advanced tab, select Performance Options. What does it say in the Virtual memory block?

Do you restart your machine daily?

    Hi Cybertech,
Thank you very much for getting back to me. Processor says 1.50GHz, then 504MB RAM. Virtual memory says 756MB. Under "change," the "own size settings" (?) is checked and it says Initial size (?) 756MB, Maximum size 1512MB. Hope this helps and thanks again for all your help

Hi again and sorry, I forgot to answer the last question :(
Well, I do USE the computer daily, not quite sure what you mean by "restart". I start it up in the morning and switch it off late in the night...but no restarts during the day, unless Windows has downloaded updates or so. Thanks again!

That all sounds ok. I can not say what is using the memory or why this is happening seemingly out of the blue.

Download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
    1. Close any open browsers.
    2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTScanIt, allow it to run.
    3. Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
    4. In Additional Scans section put a check in BotCheck and Disabled MS Config Items and EventViewer Errors/Warnings
    5. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
    6. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
    7. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
    8. Save that notepad file
If the log is too large to post, use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

    Hi Cybertech,
Thanks for your quick reply. Have done OTScanIT (BTW, it only took a minute, quite literally, that OK? - I'm asking because you suggest in the instructions that it might take a loooong time to scan all files...) and as you suspected, the log is too long, so I'm attaching it to this message.

Thanks a lot again, it's great such help is available (y)

You don't have a very large hard drive so it's not at all unusual that the scan was quick.

Nothing I found in the log other than this one error:
Description = Product: Adobe Reader 7.1.0 -- Error 1303.The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Resource\CMap. The installation cannot continue. Log on as an administrator or contact your system administrator.

I don't know if this is causing the problems or not but I would try and fix it to see.

    Hi Cybertech,
Eeeh...OK, thank you again, but how do I fix it? The laptop is mine, so the administrator...that shall be me, I suppose. Well, the admistrator aka me has no idea what to do...get rid of Adobe? Re-install Adobe? Throw the machone out of the window? (Wouldn't hurt, but I would end up without my job and money...). Sorry to bother you with this stupidity, but that's me...:(
