I'm in the process of trying to figure out what is going on with my friends computer. At his house he has a Hp monitor vga cord plugged into an dvi adaptor, well it wasn't reading the monitor any more and the power wasn't staying on. I brought it to my house and plugged in my dell dvi montior and plugged my power cord into the back and everything works fine. Is it possible that he needs a new universal power cord? I'm not sure about the mointor, I was going to the extra vga and dvi adaptor that I have.

You know the problem isn't with the computer. That means the problem is with the adapter, the cable, or the monitor. Start swapping out one piece at a time.
