My question concerns my computer and which video card to buy. I have a compaq preserio desktop, model 4090US which which has shared video with the ram. I have the original video card in the computer, but would like to update it. I added more ram and have a total of of 640, but it is shared with the video and only shows up as 632mgs of ram.

What kind of video card should I get and how will that affect the ram.

Well, an add-on video card won't take any of the system RAM, and with 640mb, you don't have much of an issue with RAM anyway. You need to identify the type of video board your system will accept, AGP or PCI. If you have an AGP slot, obviously that's the kind to buy, but I don't know about your Compaq model.
