I am doing a project for school - making a movie. It will be about 5-6 minutes in length, editing it on Adobe Premiere Pro 7. I have been doing some quick rush edits and trying to encode them to (typically MPEG format) so i can send them to my friends to review what I am doing. But when I use the adobe media encoder in premier the files end up quite large.

I have been encoding into real media format because the compression is quite good, although a reduction in quality. I am not too fussed by it, although most people don't have a real media player. I'd like to stick with MPEG format for my final cut anyhow, as it is the best quality.

I am just not sure how I got about recucing the file size. Any tips on doing this?

I would compress the .mpg to .avi using virtualdub and the divx codec. Usually very little loss in quality. Virtualdub also lets you compress audio, and other stuff too.
