    Hi,

If I attach a device with video files and play the files on the computer, there is no sound.
Sound for other music and video files on the computer does work.
I thought initially, maybe Skypes sound settings were taking over, and needed to be changed, and I modified some of skypes audio settings but it had no effect.
I did not find the sound controls in Windows 7, that I am used to adjusting in Windows XP, so I really do not know how to fix this.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    thanks,

Please provide your computer specs by running this forum's system info tool. A link to said tool was present when you started this thread. Your profile notes XP SP2.

When did the problem begin? Sometimes the exact date is important.

What changed; the install or removal of hardware or software; an update to W7 [ check the W7 update history ], to Adobe or Java; to your antimalware programs; another program update?

Please be more specific. What kind of device? A printer?
By attach do you mean physically connect, or as an email attachment?

    Sound controls
control panel > upper right, set view to "large icons"
    Open Sound

This is the 4th thread of which I am aware at this forum in which a thread referring to audio / sound problems [ from no audio to choppy audio ] has been started, since 12 Feb 2013. Might be co incidental. Might have a common component other than W7.

    Hi
Sorry I have not replied sooner I was unwell yesterday.
Around 2 weeks ago the computer failed to start up, on the third attempt the boot system gave an option to recover and restore to an earlier time. This was successful, but all windows and software updates had to be downloaded and installed again. The computer itself is fairly new, and I think I it may have been a malware file downloaded. This was removed and Norton Internet Security Suite was run.

The drives with video files are the small USB key flash drives. I was able to test a camera and phone with video files on the same USB port, both video files from these devices worked.

I then noticed that the video files that will not play sound are .avi file extension, and open in windows.
The other files open in windows also and itunes but they are .mp4.

I will also download and run the tool for testing in the link.

And I forgot to mention that when the .avi video files are played in windows player, just as the video begins there is a 1 second loud quack like sound from the video.

Below is the information from the tool.

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2120 CPU @ 3.30GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7
    Processor Count: 4
    RAM: 8104 Mb
Graphics Card: Intel(R) HD Graphics, -1988 Mb
    Hard Drives: C: Total - 1899770 MB, Free - 1547189 MB;
    Motherboard: 3NOD INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CO.,LTD., ALH236SB
Antivirus: Norton Internet Security, Updated and Enabled
    The computer is Advent. DA2207-24.

The DVD player works. After testing that other video files from the camera and phone played sound in .mp4 file extension in windows and itunes as mentioned above, I believe it is a software issue.

After downloading W7 codecs, and K-lite codecs, and restarting the computer, the same video file opens in WMP but this time there is sound but no picture, just blurred moving grey lines.
I found that the same file will play with sound in Windows 7 bundled software "Windows Live Movie maker".
I think now WMP does not play .avi format.

    Which
    source?

No anti malware program will remove every piece of malware, every time. Your computer can still be infected, or the malware might have caused W7 file corruption.

Hi RF I got your PM.

WMP should play .avi, see here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/File-types-supported-by-Windows-Media-Center.

I doubt this is due to Malware, but we will run some scans to be sure.

Please run these three scans and post the logs:

    SCAN 1
Click on this link to download : ADWCleaner and save it to your desktop.

NOTE: If using Internet Explorer and you get an alert that stops the program downloading click on Tools > Smartscreen Filter > Turn off Smartscreen Filter then click on OK in the box that opens. Then click on the link again.

Close your browser and click on this icon on your desktop: [IMG]

You will then see the screen below, click on the Delete button (as indicated), accept any prompts that appear and allow it to reboot the PC. When the PC has rebooted you will be presented with the report, copy & paste it into your next post.

    SCAN 2
Download RogueKiller (by tigzy) and save direct to your Desktop.
On the web page select the 32bit or 64bit button to match the bit rate of your version of Windows.

    • Quit all running programs.
    • Start RogueKiller.exe by double clicking on the icon.
    • Wait until Prescan has finished.
    • Ensure all boxes are ticked under "Report" tab.
    • Click on Scan.
    • Click on Report when complete. Copy/paste the contents of the report and paste into your next reply.
    • NOTE: DO NOT attempt to remove anything that the scan detects.

    SCAN 3
    Eset online scan instructions.
IMPORTANT ---> Please make sure you follow the instruction to uncheck the box next to Remove found threats. Eset will detect anything that looks even remotely suspicious, this can include legitimate program files. If you do not uncheck the box, as instructed, Eset will automatically remove all suspect files which could leave some of your software inoperative. If you make a mistake these files can be restored from quarantine, but it would be preferable not to add any extra work to the clean up of your system.

    • Disable your existing Anti Virus following these instructions.
    • Please go here to use the Eset Online Scanner.
    • When the web page opens click on this button [IMG]
    • If you are not using Internet Explorer you will see a message box open asking you to to download the ESET Smart Installer, click on the link and allow it to download and then run it. Accept the Terms of use and click on Start. The required components will download.
    • If using Internet Explorer the Terms of use box will open immediately, accept it and click on Start.
    • After the download is complete the Computer scan settings window will open, IMPORTANT ----> uncheck the box next to Remove found threats and click on Start. The virus signature database will then download which may take some time depending on the speed of your internet connection. The scan will automatically start when the download is complete.
    • This is a very thorough scan and may take several hours to complete depending on how much data you have on your hard drive. Do not interrupt it, be patient and let it finish.
    • A Scan Results window will appear at the end of the scan. If it lists any number of Infected Files click on List of found threats. Click on Copy to clipboard, come back to this thread and right click on the message box. Select Paste and the report will appear, add any comments you have and post the reply.
    • Back on the Eset window, click the Back button and then click on Finish.
