I am getting messages saying that my" minimum virtual memory is low". Computer is accessing the hard drive a-lot. I would appreciate some advice on how much memory I can safely allocate to virtual memory.

    Many Thanks.

One obvious reason why you're seeing a "virtual memory is low" message is because your Compaq Presario SR1030NX (DW256A) desktop has only 512 MB of RAM.

It appears to support 2 GB(2048 MB) of RAM, so you need to add at least another 512 MB or max it out.

It uses 184-pin DDR PC2700(DDR333), 2.5 volt, unbuffered, non-ECC 512 MB or 1 GB modules.

Do the following so we can determine what's installed and autoloading and if any obvious issues need to be addressed.

Go here and click the large green "Download" button to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.5 (HijackThis.exe) to your desktop.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows.

Double-click it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

    Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log file here.

I'm going off-line for the day, so I'll check back here in the morning to see if you've submitted the requested HiJackThis log. (y)

The second reason for your computer running slow is because it has too many startup and service entries auto-starting and running in the background.

We need to reduce that load, so do the following:

Click Start, then type MSCONFIG in the search or run box, then press the Enter key.

When the small "System Configuration Utility" window appears, click the "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

The third reason for your computer running slow is because it appears to have 2 antivirus programs installed - AVG and Avast.

One of them needs to be uninstalled because multiple antivirus programs will fight each other and slow down a computer and cause other isuses.

I recommend you keep Avast and uninstall AVG, but it's your choice.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

Is your computer using the paid or free version of Malwarebytes?

    Greetings............

I will have the msconfig startup list you requested in a couple of days. My eyes are very bad so it will take me a couple of days to type the list and check it a couple of times for mistakes. I was able to create a JPG file of the list using a screen capture utility but even when the file was compressed it was too large to attach. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I am a "hunt an peck" typist.

Also, I uninstalled AVG and re-installed AVAST 2015 as you suggested. I do have MALEWAREBYTES on my computer.

    Many thanks
    Gregg

All I need are the names in the "Startup Item" that have a checkmark next to them.

Do NOT submit any information that's in the other columns.

It's not needed and will be time-consuming for you.

Since you chose to keep Avast and uninstall AVG, you need to use the AVG removal tool to remove its leftover "debris".

Go here to download and save the 32-bit version.

Close all open windows first, then double-click it to start it.

The computer may restart one or more times while it's doing its job.

I'm aware you have it in your computer, but I need to know if you have the paid "Pro" version or the free version.

That's an extremely old version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and is useless, so uninstall it.

The current version is 2.0.3.1025 and looks a lot different from version 1.44, so I don't recommend installing and using it if you're not computer-savvy.

Here is an image of what its main window looks like.

I have glaucoma and dry macular degeneration, so I need to enlarge everything too.

I use Internet Explorer, so I set the zoom to 125% and text size to Largest.

All my display settings are set to size 12 fonts.

Do the following in the order that they're listed.

Take your time so you don't make any mistakes.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start, then type MSCONFIG in the search or run box, then press the Enter key.

When the small "System Configuration Utility" window appears, click the "Startup" tab.

Remove the checkmark in these startup entries:

    AGRSMMSG

    ALCXMNTR

    DrgToDsc

    RxMon

    isuspm

    issch

    MediaDetect

    mbamgul

    HPWuSchd2

    mswinext

    DefMgr

    AdobeARM

    jusched

    App24x7Help

    ctfmon

    GoogleToolbarNotifier

After you're done. click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start, then type SERVICES.MSC in the search or run box, then press the Enter key.

When the "Services" window appears, expand it so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click these service entries, one at a time, to open their properties window:

    24x7HelpService

    Adobe Flash Player Update Service

    FLEXnet Licensing Service

    Google Update Service

    Google Update Service

    Google Software Updater

    Java Quick Starter

Set "Startup Type" on Manual, then click Apply - OK.

After you're all done, close the services window.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

    Restart the computer.

When the small "System Configuration Utility" window appears, ignore its message about the computer being in diagnostic/selective startup mode.

Do NOT change it back to normal startup mode!!!!!!!!

Put a checkmark in the "Do not show this message again - -" box before you click OK to close that window.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

After the computer completely settles down from the restart, use it for awhile.

Make sure that everything is still working okay and if the "virtual memory is low" message is no longer appearing.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

    Frank:

I also have glaucoma and cataracts in both eyes.so I can appreciate where you are coming from. Everythings gotta be "big".

Is there anything in my startup files that needs addressing ?

I have the latest version of Malwarebytes on my Win7 laptop and get through it OK. I will install the latest version on my XP computer also.Thanks............

Will installing more ram solve my problems ? Right now I have 512 mb of ram. Is there a 512mb memory chip on the motherboard I can replace with a 1gb chip and then add another 1gb chip ?

I am considering purchasing a backup xp computer, either desktop or laptop. Refurbished would be OK. Got any suggestions where to look ?

I have alot of expensive software that will only run on an xp operating system. Mostly CAD, graphic illustration and photo editing programs. Upgrades to win7 would cost me over $ 1500.00. Plus I like the simplicity of xp as opposed to win7. I know a few people who have xp and win7 computers and they prefer the xp.

    many thanks
    Gregg
