OK ... Not sure what caused this but ....

When I got home, computer was in blue screen. Unplugged and rebooted. Hung at Starting Windows. Unplugged again and rebooted. Selected user and continued on. Hung after desktop image was downloaded and normal desktop was presented. If I moved the cursor to the task bar, got hour glass. Could not get task manager to appear and could not start any program.

Booted in safe mode with networking. Opened firefox in safe mode and it was really funky. Could not get to techguy.org. Showed some porn. Basically, it was highjacked.

Ran hijack this (probably an older version) which I then copied onto flash drive and copied onto my laptop for posting here.

Need help, thought I'm concerned that I won't be able to download any programs you suggest onto the affected computer.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Attempted to run Trend Micro scan in safe mode (without networking). First message says "No network device was found or there is a conflict with existing antivirus or security software. Only the Virsu scas, Spayware Scan and Security Check functions will be available. To enable full product functionality, uninstall conflicting software or enable a network connection, and restart program"

Clicked OK and got: "Unable to read configuration. Restart your computer and try again. (hr=-x8007043c, loc=7413.num=238)

Clicked OK and brought up control panel for Trend Micro. Chose System, Manual Scan, Local Disc C:, Scan, and it hangs.

When I go to shutdown from safe mode, explorer.exe is not responding and I have to end the program.

Rebooted in Safe Mode with Network. Got the same messages as above. Same results when I attempt to do a scan, even though I now have a network connection.

New information... I now cannot even boot in safe mode. I come up to a black screen with 'safe mode' in the corners and the OS version across the top and it just hangs. Feeling like I'm going to need to do a reformat/reinstall which I have never done before. Can you point me to some documentation? I've seen just the reinstall stuff, but I haven't been able to find directions for reformat/reinstall.

One question and one status update:

    1) I can now boot in safe mode without networking. I haven't tried with networking as of yet.

    2) If I do a re-install without reformatting, does it blow away the various systems folders and contents and then re-install or does it just copy the XP files over existing files? If some dll has been put in my system32 folder that shouldn't be there, will it still be there after a reinstall without a reformat?

Reinstall of Windows will result in having to reinstall all programs. I would caution you to back up your data prior to doing that.
