Hi guys, I’m having a problem with my laptop right now and I’m wondering if anyone could help me. I’m not super knowledgeable about tech/computer stuff so I might not explain everything right but I’ll try my best and I’d appreciate some help.

So almost a month ago I bought a new Lenovo Ideapad 330s. It’s been working fine, I use it mostly for casual use like social media, YouTube, digital art, and games like Sims 4.

I’ve been playing Sims for years and have always downloaded mods/cc for my game with no issue. A lot of custom content creators unfortunately use AdFly which can be annoying but I always use an adblocker to help and haven’t ever had any kind of malicious issues. However, today I was downloading a couple new mods and one of them was through an AdFly link. I wasn’t really paying attention because I was watching something on TV while I was downloading stuff but before I was able to click off to the download page a pop up came up that was apparently for the

1-(877)-233-5401 virus from what I could see on the page and from what I found online. I didn’t click on anything and it happened fast but it was one of the ones that had audio and said something along the lines of my computer was locked/hacked, something about my data, IP address, financial activities, and passwords, and that I had to call the number for support. I’ve had similar things pop up over the years and I know it’s a scam and not to call the number and I’ve always been able to click off and whatnot. But this time when I tried to click off and close all windows quickly nothing was working and almost right away my screen completely froze along with my mouse. I tried ctrl-alt-delete several times but my keyboard was unresponsive as well. I tried looking for solutions online but since nothing on my laptop was responding I couldn’t do anything. After about a half hour of frantically searching for something I just decided to shut down my laptop and turn it back on. When I did, it turned on to a black screen with a blue box that said:

“Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed.

Insert Recovery Media and Hit any key

Then Select ‘Boot Manager’ to choose a new Boot Device or to Boot Recovery Media”

So I hit enter and it went to a screen that said Boot Manager at the top and underneath said Boot Option Menu. Underneath that it said to use the arrows to change option and Enter to select option. But there were no options to choose from and there’s nothing else I can do from this point on. I looked online about the Boot Manager thing but my screen doesn’t even have any option to choose from so nothing is making sense to me.

I’m dumb with computer stuff and I don’t understand what any of it means so I’m getting a bit frustrated since I just bought this laptop and I’ve never had problems like this to this extent before. I’m sure I have some kind of virus but I don’t know what to do beyond this point so if anyone could offer any advice/explanation for what’s going on or what I should do next I’d really appreciate it.

Welcome to the Tech Support Guy malware removal forum.
I'm iMacg3 and will be helping you.

Please keep the following information in mind before we begin:
  • Do not run any fixes or tools on your system unless I request that you do so.
  • Please read all instructions carefully, and complete them in the order listed.
  • If your computer seems to start working normally, please don't abandon the topic. Just because your computer doesn't seem to have a problem doesn't mean that it isn't infected.
  • If you have pirated or illegal software on your computer, uninstall it now before proceeding.
  • If you have questions about anything, please ask.

--------------------

What version of Windows are you using?

Do you have the original Windows disc that came with the computer?

If not, do you have a blank CD/DVD/USB flash drive, and another computer running the same version of Windows as the affected computer?

Thanks.
