Okay, I really need some help from you.. please! :(

Over the Christmas break, my laptop seems to have developed a new problem. All of a sudden, I realized that my wireless connection was not ok, and when I did an ipconfig, the Subnet Mask had changed to 255.255.0.0 and the IPv4 address was a 169.x.x.x address. I know that my IPv4 address has to be in the 192.168.x.x range with the subnet being 255.255.255.0. That's what my other laptop has. Because my laptop couldn't get to the subnet, it couldn't get to the internet as well.

I then went into IPv4 properties and set it to Use a fixed IP, gave an available 192.168.x.x IP, provided the right subnet and gateway address, and my laptop got back its internet access.

Looks like something happened to bring the network to this state, as right after this, I realized that my Windows Update was not set to 'Automatic Update' ON. I tried to bring it up, and it would not come on. I've tried various suggestions from the net, including re-registering all the DLLs, running it Microsoft FixIt 50461 and 50202, to say the least. When I attempt to bring up the Windows Update service manually, it indicates Error 0x80072726: An invalid argument was supplied. I've tried to make sure that the dependent services are up (only one was the RPC one and that is UP).

BTW, I have removed the Norton Internet Security 2011 installed on this machine as well, while I am trying to resolve this.

I would appreciate any pointers to get this resolved. Note that if I manually assign the IP address, I can get to the internet, but not otherwise. I wonder if the Windows Update failure was caused by the IP mis-configuration, or the other way around!

    Thanks in advance!

Your computer has a large number of programs and services that are auto-loading and running in the background.

Many of them don't need to auto-load and run at all, and others can be manually started as needed.

I'm going to assist you in trimming down that bloated startup load, so follow these instructions carefully and completely:

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

Remove the checkmark in these entries:

    IgfxTray or igfxtray

    HotKeysCmds or hkcmd

    Persistence or igfxpers

    UpdateLBPShortCut or MUIStartMenu

    UpdatePSTShortCut or MUIStartMenu

    UpdateP2GoShortCut or MUIStartMenu

    UpdateDIRShortCut or MUIStartMenu

    SunJavaUpdateSched or jusched

HP Health Check Scheduler or HPHC_Scheduler

    HP Software Update or HPWuSchd2

    BarbieGirlsTray or Mattel.BarbieGirls.Tray

    TkBellExe or realsched

    SearchSettings

    GrooveMonitor

    QuickTask or QTTask

    iTunesHelper

Adobe Reader Speed Launcher or Reader_sl

    Adobe ARM or AdobeARM

    HPAdvisor

    TomTomHOME

OneNote 2007 Screen Clipper and Launcher or ONENOTEM

    OpenOffice.org 3.2

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart.

Click start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the window so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click on these entries one at a time to open their properties window.

If "Startup Type" is set on Automatic, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

    Application Updater

    Com4QLBEx

    GameConsoleService

    HP Health Check Service

    hpqwmmiex

    InstallDriver Table Manager

    Cyberlink RichVideo Service

    TomTomHOMEService

    XAudioService

After you're done, close the window and then restart your computer.

Start HiJackThis and run a scan.

Save that new log and then submit it here.

    --------------------------------------------------

If you've uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2011, you need to run a special removal tool to get rid of all the leftover files and registry entries for it.

I also recommend not installing it, and I recommend replacing it with Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0.657.0.

Go here and click one of the MajorGeeks links to download and save it.

After that's done, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to run it.

Allow it to remove everything that's associated with Symantec, Norton, and LiveUpdate.

After the removal process is complete, restart your computer.
