    Hey guys,

I've been having this problem for a while now, and I am not sure what's causing it. My computer freezes for a minute or so, and then resumes working as if nothing happened. During the freeze there's no HD activity, and just before it lets go they start searching like crazy. The only thing that stays alive during this is the mouse, and I believe that the computer remembers its every manipulation (i.e. maximizing/minimizing a program). Sometimes it happens during gameplay (ARGGGGGH), sometimes when i browse the www (Mozilla). I believe I have all the updates from MS. Today I was trying to run a program, the computer froze, and then I got an error message: "ntvdm.exe is not responding". This was the first time I've seen it, and don't know if the freeze-ups are related to this.

I am running Vista Home Premium on Emachines t5230

I really appreciate your help, let me know if you want the hijack log.
    Thanks a bunch.

    I knew I left something out :)
I have 2 gigs, and this is a 32-bit version of Vista

I was hoping you didn't have enough, because I couldn't think of anything else. :)

If this site http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/dangerous_files/3920-ntdvmexe.html is correct I think that you better post that HijackThis log and click on the red triangle to the top right of a post and ask a moderator to move your thread to the Malware Removal forum. Good luck.

Sorry, misspelled the filename - it is actually ntvdm.exe, which is a part of Windows

I have been working with the same issues-exactly. I upgraded to 2gb ram thinking that would ease the problem. It made it worse. The system freezes during high HD use, generally. I also have tyhe same emachines t5230 system. I would like some help with a solution for this. Thanks!

Uninstall all your nortons antivirus rubbish. You may have to forcefully remove it so download nortons removal tool (run a search for it, its free) and install something like avast (free also). bet my left processor that works. DEATH TO NORTONS>>>>>>>

"ntvdm.exe is process that belongs to the Windows 16-bit Virtual Machine. It provides an environment for a 16-bit process to execute on a 32-bit platform. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated."
ONLY if you are running a legit 16-bit app.

Now days, the above could indicate a virus or spyware, Unless you are running a 16-bit app. Something really old.
The statement about "stable and secure running of your computer" is not entirely true.

"conime.exe is a part of the the Microsoft Windows Operating System and is essential for the secure and safe operation of your computer.. This process is used when a Asian laguage is used in Windows.

Note: conime.exe could also be a process which is registered as the Input Method Editor Remote administration backdoor tool. This backdoor application can allow attackers to access your computer, stealing passwords and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system."

Make sure the above is a legit program on your system. Something you installed.

You are using Bitcomet, so it is possible you downloaded a virus.
It doesn't matter what anti-virus you use, downloading torrents will eventually infect your system.
Scan your system with Eset online scanner and Windows Live OneCare Safety scanner.
Even a couple others might be a good idea.

Get rid of norton (resource hog and misses viruses)
install either NOD32 (low resource impact and a good anti-virus) or
Windows Live OneCare (low resource impact and a good anti-virus/anti-spyware).
You will have a resource impact with Avast and KAV.

    Also, it's an AMD eMachine

upgraded the emachines 5230 to 2 gigs. made it worse as it did for the other poster please post any updates. The regular troubleshooting stuff is not relevant in this case ( e.g remove norton, etc) . From months of research I know this is a vista specific issue. may be related to network access, shared folders, or Intel RAID drivers settings drive . One good page is this one, read through the updates: http://www.flyingnerd.com/intel-raid-problem-under-windows-vista/

    Trying the following:

    - turn off the computer browser services
-uninstalled google desktop that came as bloatware
-need to check on SAT drive etc per google search results about sata port fix that DELL users tried problem
-Need to try MS hotfix for this issue: http://support.microsoft.com/KB/937228

I would remove Norton's along with BitComit.
I would then install a AV and Firewall that is not Norton's or McAfee.
I use AVAST for a AV and ZoneAlarm for a firewall, they are both FREE.
