    Hello!

Yesterday my main computer lost internet connectivity after avast! ran an antivirus scan and removed several viruses. I spent much of the day yesterday researching the possible problems and did not come up with any solutions.

My computer's OS is vista, and the network status says it is, "Connected to identifying". If there is any additional information you will need, I will gladly provide. Thank you in advance for the response!

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or 7.

Start - All Programs - Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

    Reboot the machine.

    ----------------------------------

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

    Type the following command:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Maybe a non-Windows firewall corrupted. If you have one, which one?

Or maybe still something left over from the viruses.

I was using AVG's firewall, but I disabled that.

I can try another AV, would you suggest any in particular?

AVG has been gaining a fantastic reputation (at least with me) for fouling networking. Uninstall it and run the AVG Remover. It may be necessary to then run the stack repairs again.

Now you're getting Media disconnected, as if there is no cable connected. Is the ethernet LED on?

Do you know why the ethernet LED was not lit? That may be a clue. I'm mostly suspecting a defective cable or NIC.

I have no idea, but the ethernet LED came back when I restarted my router.

I guess that makes a defective router port another suspect.

We might be able to cross defective cable off the list. I tried using another cable (the one this computer is attached to, actually), and it didn't work then, either.

How would you suggest going about fixing the NIC or defective router port?
