I have a sony viao dual core laptop and all internet connectivity has suddenly ceased.

I have nothing listed in available networks and am unable to connect to the router even with a direct cable connection. Every other device in teh house can connect (old XP pc and games console).

Running network sharing I get the notification that 'The dependency service or group failed to start'. Running diagnostics identifies that there is a fault, but not what or where. This is affecting both wired and wireless connection.

Vista sp1 was installed automatically on 12th September, it all went tits up on 17th, so I don't think I can point the finger at sp1. I previously had a vpn set up listed for connection to my work network, but that is missing from the connections tab in internet connections. I get the feeling that there is a dll that is either corrupt or missing, but I'm just guessing on that score.

I tried ipcongfig/all and it responded that the media was disconected (amongst the numbers and stuff)

The last thing I remember being installed was an adobe update for adobe reader 8.

It also takes an age to boot up. perviously it was reasonable quick, but now it takes longer than boiling the kettle for a cup of tea.

Any thoughts or advice? the machine is 9 months old.

Taking ages to boot indicates that the networking may be only one problem of many. Try the following repairs.

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

If you still cannot get a connection, try Safe Mode with Networking.

If you still cannot get a connection, try to connect both wireless and ethernet and show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

My hunch, from your multiple problems, is that there is something really seriously wrong software or hardware. Suggest reinstall Windows and, if still under warranty, contact Sony.
