When clicking on the power button or 'sleep', the monitor shuts down; but the fan continues to run. Is this normal, as I have read that you can keep the PC in sleep mode for extended periods of time?

The problem is that my PC is quite noisy & it would be me who would not be able to get into sleep mode, if I did not shut-down my computer!!!

See if a BIOS update is available, and if there are settings in BIOS for different types of "sleep", like S3, S1, etc. It is common but not "normal" and will still wear out your fan when it is "sleeping". Or you could try hibernate. Hibernate uses no power and data is not lost when power fails as it can be with sleep.
