I have a dell so I have a disk that says reinstallation dvd windows vista home premium. Can I reformat my hard drive and then install windows xp. And if in the future I want vista I can use this disk to reinstall vista?

Yes, you can use that disk to reinstall Vista. Before installing XP, verify at Dell's website that you can get Windows XP drivers for all the hardware.

All the hardware in the computer: the graphics adapter, network adapter, chipset, drive controller sound card, etc. Everything.
