Vista Update Hangs

    I try to run windows update and windows defender definitions update and I get an opening screen and then just the cute mousepointer with the ever running circle.

    The only way I can exit from either is to run taskman and shut it down.

    The shutodown message I get is:

    I've sent a ticket to Microsoft, but I spent 5 hours in chat with them last night, so I'm just hopeful, but not expecting.

    Hope someone can help, I've enjoyed using this laptop.
