I am corresponding with a person who wants to sell a windows vista home basic DVD.
I have explained that I need a retail version not an OEM or upgrade version.
The seller is not to sure which version it is and has look on the box and DVD but found no reference to an OEM version.

So my question is how can you tell what version a vista DVD is?
Is it on the box or on the DVD?

    1) The outside packaging says OEM System Builder Pack.
    2) If it is installed and activated then Control Panel > System > Activation shows OEM in the product ID.
    3) The physical DVD will say "Licensed only for distribution with a new PC". For product support contact the manufacturer of your PC

Even if it is OEM it will install and activate on a home-built PC, but I would ensure the installation disk is formatted. I think you do not get 90 day support with the OEM version (Not 100% sure about that though)
