The printer portion of my H-P printer/scanner/fax has worked from the first under Vista. I couldn't even install the software. H-P's website pointed me to a Microsoft webpage, after apologizing that their current drivers were incompatible with Vista. From Microsoft, I was directed to access the scanner through MS Paint. From File to Import from scanner or camera.

In checking for Vista updates, I saw that new H-P drivers were available. However, they won't install. Each time I try, they fail to install. Should I perhaps uninstall the printer and try again?

According to HP, the printer does work with Vista as you have found.

HP have not released a driver. Therefore its unclear why MS are offering you a driver, the error number apparently suggests that "Windows has determined that the selected driver is not the best driver for your PC."

    Hence it correctly fails.

The HP explanation of Vista functionality is here:

You would be best to email HP and ask them if they will ever issue a full function Vista driver. I have a 7210, they have done so for that. I never accept device drivers from Windows updates, only from the device maker.

Thanks, kiwiguy, I'm on the list to be notified when drivers are available. I will take your advice about MS drivers vs. OEM drivers, too.
