How long have you waited? You should wait a long time, up to several hours, before giving up. It can be a very slow process on some machines.

I also should mention, did you use Windows Update or did you install the Sp1 standalone update?

Without the needed Windows Updates, the installation usually still goes through the steps and then results in a message that the installation failed. Going to Windows Update at that point shows that some updates (or 1) are needed.

So, it should still complete. I know of nothing else to do at this point but to wait for it, all day if necessary. It's hard to say what is going on and what files have been changed, so stopping it may mean the end of the OS running.

One thing you might try is running chkdsk /r from the recovery environment. That should have been done, of course, before attempting to install. Updates should only be installed on systems that are working well and have no errors for successful installations.

Hopefully, you have all your files backed up.

I had the same issue. Tried to install. Hung at the 3rd stage for a good 30 minutes before I got a message telling me the installation had failed. This happen three times then I decided to try insatlling it in safe mode. Not the smartest thing to do in hindsight but installed without a hitch. Haven't had any issues yet with it.

According to my research Vista Service Pack 1 installation will fail at Stage Three if you are missing this file: %systemroot%\System32\wbem\servicemodel.mof you can get the needed files here copy them to the System32\wbem\ folder and reinstall Service Pack 1.
