If it's working for some files and not for others, then the issue is likely with those files and not VLC.

Most likely, the images are missing or in an incorrect format. Have you tried adding or changing the cover art with VLC?

Keep an eye on this thread that mentions avi broken in v 3.0.6
    https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=148059

The suggestion was to try v 4 of the nightly build.

I downloaded the portable version of 3.0.6 and will test some of my avi files. I don't have any mkv to test. I've stuck with v2 installed because of problems I've heard with v 3 versions.

Update: I tested 4 avi files on my Win 7 32 bit desktop. All played fine.
On my 64 bit Win 7 laptop, I discovered that I had an mkv file. I played that and 3 different avi files with no problem.

So, v 3.0.6 doesn't appear to break avi playback at least in Windows 7 both 32 bit and 64 bit.
