for some reason my computer doesn't have volume. it makes a noise when i do caps lock, however it is no longer in the taskbar. when i looked at the settings for it in the list of taskbar programs, it was in the list of things that are no longer there. also, there is a shield with an X on it. there was no way to drag it back up. this is a major issue because this is my sisters laptop and she needs it back soon and i need to fix it. anywho, is there anyone out there who knows a sure way it can work because i've tried a lot of things and it just isnt working.
Right click 'My Computer' and select 'Manage' then 'Device Manager'. Are there any exclamation or question marks? If so double click the line with the !/? and what does it say in the middle of the box?
yes, my computer makes "sounds" when i press caps lock and other things but when i do go to the control panel thing it says there is no audio device at all the volume control isnt there at all
oh under sounds videos and controllers it has:audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices, and video codecs....also, under other devices, it says multimedia audio controller and it has a question mark and an explamation point on it
Search for the file on your computer by name. Sometimes they are not located where your computer expects to find them and you have to tell it where to look.
If the file is there type the path to the folder where the file is located in the box at the bottom of the popup.
oh and there used to be a thing under my caomputer>manage>device manager>other that said multimedia audio controller with a ? and ! next to it, but now its gone and it isnt there anymore under any of the other extended trees
Go to the audio controller that has the ! mark on it. Right click>properties> remove.
Then reboot the computer and let Windows reinstall it. Let us know if this helps at all.

Have you tried to do a system restore to a date before you had this problem?
(click on Start>all programs>accesories>system tools>system restore then follow on screen things).

dang, no i havent done that, omg am i never going to be able to get my volume back? i just went there and its like there are no other restore points other than today available
Try going to the web site for the MFG of the computer, perhaps they will be able to help you locate what you need... Most mfgs. are good at helping diagnose problems and helping you solve them if you approach them in a polite way.
