    Greetings & Happy New Year,

    Computer has gotten sluggish lately.
    W98, 160MB Ram, 6GB (386MB Free)
    Win386.SWP set manually at 256MB - C:\WIN386.SWP

    Tried to clean up my hard drive.
    Ran Scandisk & ME Defrag in DOS/Safe mode. No change.
    Ran MS RegClean
    New problem:
    Now have C:\WINDOWS\WIN386.SWP (83MB)
    I didn't notice this before - Is it necessary? Can I delete it?

    Other issues: Duplicate EXE files.
    C:\Program Files\Graphics Programs\FrontPage Express
    C:\Program Files\Graphics Programs\FrontPage Express\BIN
    What is BIN - Is it necessary to run FPX ?

    Duplicate EXE files. Zone Labs (vsmon.exe, vsruledb.dll, vsutil.dll)
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ZoneLabs
    C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\Repair

    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Installer\{B36C4994...}
    C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\MAX\Application Data\Microsoft\Installer\{B36C4994...}

    Outlook Express: dbx files
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{0E4B2280-73B9-....}
    C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\MAX\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express

    Duplicate SYS files
    C:\ATI\INSTALL
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS

    Duplicate SYSTEM DLL files
    hhctrlui.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MUI\0411
    hhctrlui.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MUI\0412
    hhctrlui.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MUI\0804
    hhctrlui.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MUI\0404
    hhctrlui.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MUI\0405
    hhctrlui.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MUI\040B

    Thanks,
    Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.
    Ray

    I don't delete Duplicate because I know many are needed and some are even backups. Like ZoneLabs makes a backup so you want to keep them.

    WIN386.SWP is you swap file so you have to keep it.

    I don't know about the other things but someone else can help you out.

    Hi it's too easy to become over kean to have a new year cleanup..
    And you could overclean and remove files that your system needs to function..
    D/load Easycleaner..

    Use Registry and unnecessary files only...NOT Duplicates

    blues_harp28,
    I've done it too, years ago, by being new and not being thorough enough.
    Now I read everything I can first and don't trust anybody especially in the system or register area. Thanks for the d'peg tip, I might use it on jpegs or gifs.
    Cheers,
    Ray Mann
