Hey guys, One of the children messed w/ pc this morning. During boot-up I get a still page of messages starting w/ : Cannot find a device file that may b needed to run windows or a win. application.
The windows registry or system INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. ETC. ETC...

At the start menu I found some of the program Icons shuffled around. I cannot log-in to Hotmail but I can to Yahoo. I ran spybot, Adaware and fixed checked problems. Also, the clock time is off and can't open AVG to run a virus check. I have win. 98 SE, 64 mem. speed:333. On my programs menu I have: IE Q831167 followed by: Microsoft data access components KB870669, Mic. IE 6 SP1 & internet tools, Mic. Outlook Express. Is any of these a problem ? Do I need all this crap in there ? and if you don't mind, giving me some troubleshootin' instructions at your earliest convenience.
    Thanks a mil. ;)

The simplest thing I can think of is to do a System Restore to the last Restore point before the problems began. That can fix a lot of problems, and is very easy to do.

Uh-oh ! Maybe you haven't been generating restore points, but we can try and see. I am not sure if this works in W98 or not.
Navigate: Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
Select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and click the NEXT button. If you have restore points available, you will get a calander page with some dates in darker numbers. If there are no dates this month, click the "<" symbol at the top to gao back to last month. Select a date (yesterday or earlier) One or more checkpoints will appear in the right-hand window of the next screen. Select a point (even if there is only one) and click the NEXT button. You will be prompted to close down all open windows (do it) and click the OK button. You will get another instruction page with a NEXT button which will do all the dirty work.

If this is not the correct procedure in W98, someone else may be able to tell you how to do it.

Nah, don't have system restore under system tools. Thanks for your
time and effort though. I'll wait for other suggestions, no problem. ;)

Regarding my previous thread. I was reading about the problem w/christyny.
I think I want to take the same action. I have nothing of value stored in files, at least none that I can't replace. I have the 98se cd on hand. So, I would like to wipe everything clean except our em accounts of course. How can I begin this process ? and, will it work and get rid of all these problems ?

We need you to answer a few questions before we may proceed:

You mention "me" accounts. What are you referring to? If we are to format the hard drive, everything in the computer will be gone.

Do you have the Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (ProductKey) for your Windows 98 SE installation?

In order to erase the hard drive, you will need also a Windows 98 SE startup diskette (boot diskette). Do you have this diskette?

Except for Notepad and Wordpad, there will be no other applications after the installation, thus any Word Processing or Spread Sheet Application presently in your computer will be erased.

In addition, all drivers required by the existing hardware will need to be reloaded.

If you have all of the above, the installation of Windows 98 SE is quite Simple:

    1. Insert the Windows 98 SE startup diskette and boot the computer.
    2. At the Menu select Command prompt with CD Support. A letter will be assigned to your CD_ROM, if available CD_ROM drivers in the startup diskette are compatible with your CD_ROM drive. Take note of that.
    3. At he prompt type the following and press Enter:

    Format C:

    4. After Format is completed, insert the Installation CD. At the prompt type the following and press Enter:

    X:SETUP

Where X is the letter assigned to your CD_ROM drive.

    5. Follow instructions on screen for installation. Have the ProductKey handy for installation.

The above process will wipe-out the hard drive and will provide you with a fresh installation of the operating system.

There are ways to reinstall Windows 98 over itself. All you have to do is to copy the entire contents of the Installation CD into a new folder in the computer, for example, C:\Win98, then run the Setup utility from there. This process will reinstall Windows without affecting the contents of your hard drive.

Lets say that you copy the contents of Installation CD into the C:\Win98 folder (Newly Created). In order to reinstall Windows over itself follow these steps:

Press F8 during startup to enter the Startup Menu. Select Safe Mode Command Prompt Only. At the prompt type the following and press Enter after each line:

    cd win98
    SETUP

Follow instructions on screen for installation (You will also need the ProductKey). This process will not affect the contents of you hard drive.

    Best wishes!

Just thought I'd be specific. I meant to say I'd like to re-install win 98se.
Anyone ? A brief instruction should be sufficient. Thanks very much. (y)

May I suggest booting to a dos (command prompt) by using the start, shutdown option, then type

    scanreg/restore
    and hit enter

What kind of dates are there?

I've also merged both of your threads since they are really related.

I am honored Candy. To you also sir, thanks. To answer your questions, yes I have ms authenticity for the 98se cd. However, I only have a 98 boot diskette. Also, I was referring to e-mail accounts earlier. I guess that should be a big DUH! on my part pardon me (perdon) I should say that I tried Candy's suggestion 1st. Here r the dates I'm getting: 08/20/04>not started>rb004.cab, 08/17/04>not started>rb003.cab, 02/22/04>started>rb002.cab I tried this option but no resolve as of yet. The re-installation sounds like a (mucho) process, perhaps even "risky". Like I said b4, long as I just keep the wordpad, notepad & mail accts. everything else can be chucked. Also, I don't have the drivers you mentioned. This lil unit was a gift some years ago from a private law firm.

The merged thread is confusing me, but that's an easy thing to do.

To fix the kid's mess up, just follow AcaCandy's instructions and select the first date before the problem. From the dates, I assume you don't shut this computer down often.

911, (howdy, Bob), the system restore is an XP thing to my knowledge.

These dates are way back to 2004. Seems that ScanRegistry is not enabled in your configuration files, thus backups are not being produced. I doubt you will be able to restore the registry to any of those dates.

Can you be more especific as to the exact error message you are receiving. Post the Exact error message including the files (Modules) involved.

Meanwhile, download Hiackthis. Run the program and save the log. Post its contents in a reply:

Wow, this thing's getting worse. I tried Candy's method a couple times. The first said: You have restored a good registry that contains no errors> restart.
There was no change. The 2nd time I'm getting these pop-ups.thin screensaver across the middle,etc.... Well, during boot-up I get this: Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or win. application. The win. reg. or system INI file refers to this device file, but the file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose try uninstalling the associated application using it's uninstall or set-up program. If u still wann'a use the application associated w/ this device file try re-installing that application to replace the missing file....C:\Progra~1\grisoft\AVG6\AVGGre.vxd....press any key to cont.
Now, I believed I uninstalled AVG and it's components using add/remove programs when I couldn't access it. Also, everytime the computer boots, this annoying boot-scanner engages. I'm just about to throw my hands up in the air or this pc out the window. As for my HJT, it could well be outdated but this is what I got from the scan...Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7

Try JSntgRvr's excellent process of reinstalling Window$ over itself. That way you don't lose your drivers and any .doc files, WAB and such. It sounds like the kids deleted your system. ini files, but I thought scanreg /restore should fix that, but I know a lot less than most.

If that doesn't work, format and reinstall per his directions, but note his caution about losing the drivers, most can be found on the net, but it can be a hassle.
