I would like to upgrade my dell dimension 4100 from win me to xp. I have a pentium III 1ghz, 384 mb ram. I have a little over 1/4 of my 80 gig hd free. what steps should I take to optimize my system and make the jump to the next level of windows?

Well, if possible, free up some space on the drive by burning files to CD (although with 20G available, that's not really a problem).

Might be an idea to fit more ram if possible.

Apart from that, upgrading is pretty painless, just takes about 1/2 hour I think. XP will just upgrade the system files etc, but all programs that are compatible with it will still run (and those that are not can be run under compatibility mode anyway).

Make a backup of your important data before doing the Upgrade- there's a small chance you'll run into problems or lose data.

VileSlay:

If you've got 75% of that 80 GB hard drive being used, you need to do some "housecleaning" before you make the upgrade.

Do a "search" of files and folders and delete EVERYTHING that appears under:

*.TMP

C:\TEMP\*.*

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\*.*

*.OLD

*.BAK

*.CHK

MSCREATE.DIR

Once you're done, empty the Recycle Bin to reclaim the hard drive space.

----------------------------------------------------------------

The Recycle Bin reserves 10% of the hard drive for its use. In your case, that would be about 8 GB.

Right-click the Recycle Bin, click Properties, move the slider back to 2% - 3%, then click Apply - OK.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Run Disk Defragmenter after you empty the Recycle Bin.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Disable or uninstall your antivirus program so it doesn't run in the background and interfere with the upgrade process.

----------------------------------------------------------------

If a printer, scanner, camera, PDA, etc. are connected to your computer, disconnect them. The only things needed are the computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Make sure to install the upgrade in C:\WINDOWS and nowhere else. If it tries to install in C:\WINDOWS.000 or some other location, edit it to read C:\WINDOWS before you continue on.

in order to clean my comp up I've posted a hijackthis log here . if anyone can help me out with that, I would very much apprecaite that. are there any apps that can help me get rid of useless stuff, i.e. stuff that may have been left behind from removed programs or any of those temp files that I may have missed?

Personally, I don't see much sense in the members of this forum spending the time and effort to fix your Windows ME log if you're planning to upgrade to Windows XP.

You'd be much better off with allowing the Windows XP CD to format and wipe out the hard drive and then installing Windows XP from scratch. This'll get rid of all the accumulated junk in your computer and will also prevent any problems in Windows ME from being carried over into Windows XP.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Your computer has way too many unnecessary programs running in the background, and it has way too many activeX controls that are associated with on-line gaming(which exposes your computer to spyware and other "nasties").

You shouldn't need to format to get a clean install.

Delete the current \windows and \progra~1 (program files from DOS) directories.

Then when you install XP, just take the default \windows directory and there won't be anything left over from the previous OS.

This way you can keep all your data on the drive if you need it.

You can format and that is certainly an option. But just like a plain Win98 install, in this case you don't have to unless you want to. At least they can make a better informed choice for which they want to do. A lot might depend on how much data there is that needs to be kept and whether it is backed up somewhere else already.

VileSlay:

You said at the beginning of your post that your DELL Dimension 4100 has 384 MB of RAM. Since it has 2 RAM slots, I'll assume that it has a 128 MB module and a 256 MB module. You might consider replacing the 128 MB module with a 256 MB module and getting that computer up to its fully-supported amount of 512 MB. Windows XP and its associated apps are very memory-hungry, so the more RAM there is, the better.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Bob:

Again, thanks for the information. That'll give VikeSlay another option to consider that I didn't mention.

I've been following this conversation because I am also about to upgrade from ME to XP, on a Dell Latitude. I have a virus in System Restore files that I can't get rid of and was told that reinstalling the ME or upgrading to XP would get rid of it. (Nothing else has worked.) Do you have any additional info for me? (Please see my post from July 11 in another thread.)
THANKS SO MUCH!!

Turn off System Restore, reboot, turn System Restore back on, then reboot again.

That'll get rid of the System Restore point files, along with any viruses that are residing in them.

---------------------------------------------------------------

What speed is the processor and how much RAM is installed?

You might consider going to the www.pcpitstop.com site and running the XP readiness test.

actually I started that thread there because it was suggested by another member for another issue I had posted about.

Elvandil said:
You may want to post a HijackThis log in the Security section to eliminate malware as a possibility.
I want to clean the log right now because I'm not completely set to upgrade yet. I'm taking baby steps to get my system as stable as possible and to researching whats the best course of action to take.

to answer the question of ram, yes that is what I currently have, a 128 and 256. I have yet to purchase the second 256 because my income is very sensitive. that is another reason why i'm taking it slow, as I mentioned above. I have "inherited" this computer when my family decided to get a new one rather than continue fixing it up. so at the moment I don't even have an internet connection on it (getting phone hooked up this week). the computer needs a bit of work because if you read the thread above, it's been though a tough time

now if I allow the xp cd to format and wipe out my drive, would that not erase ALL the files (i.e. music, my art work, refence material, etc.)I have on the computer as well? I had a plan to get an external hard drive to store most of those files anyway, but I can't float that yet.
