Hey guys. I'm trying to help my buddy out of a bit of a jam. His hard drive has crashed and he has several years of pictures that are now lost. Tons of family pics of his kids and stuff. I've already given him the talk about backing things up but for now recovery is what we are hoping for.

The drive is a 3.5 WD drive in a Gateway desktop. I've pulled the drive and put it in an external enclosure and plugged it in to a couple different PC's but am unable to read anything. I can hear some clicking as I'm trying to connect but that's as far as I get. I've tried connecting with a Windows 10 pc as well as a Ubuntu pc.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks I could try? Professional recovery is way out of his price range at this point. I know his financial situation and was hoping to solve it for him without cost. I'm willing to invest in more gadgets if any exist. Any suggestions or advise will be greatly appreciated.

If linux will not see the drive AND you are hearing the "Click of death" you are pretty much out of luck.
At this point, your only real option is a data recovery shop ie a real shop NOT a best buy or other chain store. Those places simply send your drive to a real shop and add on to the bill.
