Web pages displayed half screen

Running MSIE 6 on Winxp. Any web pages opened up only use just over half the width of the screen leaving just under a half a screen of blank space on the right. This is on almost all pages - some others take up half the screen directly in the middle of the screen but leaves a blank strip either side of the middle.
