I find myself in a rather unpleasant situation. For about twelve years now, I have had my personal website hosted by a website hosting company that went out of business (sold out to another company). The "new" owner automatically migrated all of my files. The old provider used PHP 5.3. The new owner uses PHP 5.4. The old provider had unlimited email users included in the package. The old provider uses Horde email hosting. The new owner also has increased the renewal rate to an amount that is way out of my price range.

So I have purchased new web hosting.

Here's the thing. My new provider only allows 6 email users, after that it is $1.99 per month per user! I have about 200 Current users, all with my domain name of course. That, as well, is out of my price range.

I see that Horde is an open source project. I am hoping that someone can advise me if
1: I can continue to use Horde on my own to manage my 200 email users.
2: Can I Store the email accounts at a different location than where my website will be hosted?

I am not even sure if I am asking the right questions.
I am a user who has little to no knowledge of computer back end.
I am looking forward to some direction and advice.
Thank you in advance for any help.

Move immediately to a proper web host

For a start no hosting company should be using any 5.x version of PHP. If there is software that won't run on modern 7.2 PHP then 5.6 is the latest still supported version that has fewer security holes & bugs than older ones.

Any site using 5.4 is asking for trouble.

Thank you very much, Derek, for your comment regarding my PHP. Since I didn't know that issue to even ask about it, I am most grateful for your response. ("So I have purchased new web hosting" and they support the up to date PHP version)

My biggest issue is regarding the emails. 95% of my email users messages are forwarded.
I need to find out if I can continue to use Horde to manage my emails. If so, how do I make that happen? If not who might be able to provide free or cheap email hosting? Or suggestions of what options might be useful for me to explore.

If the emails are forwarded have you considered making them just alias's to other active accounts, you generally don't need to pay for an alias.

And yes, you can use a different email provider and use a different website hosting company. You just need to update your DNS records so that it knows where to go. $2 per account is a bargain compared to the hosted exchange accounts we sell to our clients for 3 times that price.

    To Triple6:

First, I would like to thank you for this wonderful support forum. I have been a member since 1999, and have searched the forum countless times and gotten excellent advice just reading from others who have had the same issues, and of course had my own questions posted and answered.

Second, Just to clarify your response to me above
($2 per account is a bargain compared to the hosted exchange accounts we sell to our clients for 3 times that price.)
Do you charge $6 per email user name per Month?

    Thirdly:
1.) How does an email alias work?
    2.) What are DNS records and how does one update them to "know where to go" {especially when I don't know where it should go, so can you help me to learn where it should go}
3.) When you say "yes, you can use a different email provider and use a different website hosting company" do you mean that I can host my domain name EMAILs only ([email protected] x 200 other user names) with one provider like InMotion and also host my website (mydomain.com) with all its supporting pages, images, databases and other files with another provider like Hostgator using same domain name at each provider...... just splitting the website from the email?
Am I asking the right questions yet?

    1) About $5 to $10 Canadian per user per month for a hosted Exchange account, for non-profits it can be much less though. We have one client who pays approximately $1200 per month for their approximately 160 email accounts and associated services.

    2) DNS, specifically A Records and MX records are accessed via your domain registrar/hoster control panel. Basically they tell the world where to find your websites, email servers, etc.

    3) Sure, you can host your website at one place and your email at your email at a second place. So as an example you can use GoDaddy to purchase your domain name, ie. mycompany.com, then use HostGator to host your website; ie www.mycompany.com, and then use InMotion to host your email, ie myemail@mycompany.com. All this is determined by what you set the records too.

Here's a quick article that may help: https://www.copernica.com/en/blog/post/a-record-and-mx-record-how-does-it-work

Ok. I will have to take some time to consider this information.

Thank you very much!! I had no idea email user accounts had gotten so expensive!!!

At my age I still enjoy learning, but am increasingly slower to absorb and to understand how to apply what I am learning to my projects. Your continuing help is most welcome and appreciated.

I think that after I carefully study all of the info you have provided, I will have my EMail problem figured out but will still need to resolve the PHP issue. I will be back to continue with that line of questions soon.

Ok, I have fixed the email issue thanks to the alias suggestion.
Now on to my website PHP and migration issue. I don't know if I should continue this thread or start a new one. I will go ahead and post the issue and take advice as to whether it should be a new thread.
Above, dvk01 wrote: "For a start no hosting company should be using any 5.x version of PHP"
So I have actually purchased new hosting that supports the most recent PHP version. I haven't moved my files yet, because they are written in PHP 5.3. (and don't work) My question is, is there a way to upgrade the PHP that will "upgrade" the code in my files? I think I would like to do that before migrating my files. Is that possible, does it make sense? It seems like moving clean files makes more sense. My php files are from a template I got years ago and I have no idea how to fix the code myself. Any advice will be much appreciated!!! Thank you in advance for your response.

You might be better off to start a new thread for that. I personally have no experience with web design so I can't offer any support on that.
