Someone advised me when trying to get on website when it's really busy you can load the page quicker by putting in the IP address. Is this true? I have the IP address for the seetickets.com site http://212.84.70.183/ - but the page won't load for me using that. What could be the reason? Thanks

When sending an HTTP request to a server, part of the communications protocol includes the browser sending the domain name of the server. It could be that the server is expecting this information and displays nothing if it not included.

EDIT: I am not sure if there is any real speed gain using the IP address. When you first visit a web site, your computer goes to a DNS server to get the IP address of the domain name. That may take a few hundred milli-seconds. The computer caches this information for future use and it takes a few microseconds to get the IP address.

If multiple websites are being hosted using 1 ip address, you will get the main website instead of your intended website. Better to use the domain name.
