This problem occurred at the same time as another issue I am having, where all of my Times New Roman fonts are showing as arial. For that I’ve reinstalled all of the fonts, checked the registry for proper entries and even copied known good fonts from another computer still to no avail.

Back to the current problem. I reset the browser and that didn’t help. In about, it recognizes the browser as IE 8 and of course, the actual browser is IE 8. I have virus scanned, spyware scanned and no problems have been found. Any ideas?

I'm running Vista Ulitmate SP2 on an HP TX-1305 tablet.

    IE8 being recognized as IE6 - Strange.
    Only two ideas...

    1) Did you try a system restore to back before the problems started?
I would suggest running it in safe mode.

    What is System Restore?:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/What-is-System-Restore

Start your computer in safe mode:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

    2) Check the Microsoft fix-it center for IE repairs, see what they have to offer.
Might have to uninstall IE8 and revert back to IE7 and then reinstall IE8.

    Microsoft Fix it Solution Center:
    http://support.microsoft.com/fixit#tab2

The font problem might also get repaired in the above process or you could
check to see if you have anything marked in accessibility.
    IE->Tools->Internet Options->General Tab->Accessibility button.

You might also make sure your font settings are correct, font button on the
general tab. If they are set correctly, try setting to a different font, close IE and
then re-open and set to Times New Roman, close and then reopen IE.

Try running IE in safe mode with networking.

Advanced startup options (including safe mode):
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

If fonts work properly, look to add-ons or another program causing it.

Upon futher recollection, I just realized that all of this happened after i uninstalled ad-aware and rebooted. It makes sense now.

Unfortunately, I am an idiot and disable system restore to free up space and resources. I don't even have the restore discs. So....

I solved the font issue, had to fix the fontsubstitution registry keys, most of the fonts got switched to Segoe UI.

Anyhoo, I did a complete uninstall of IE8, back to IE7 and reinstalled back to IE 8 and same problem. I try to go to sites like www.wsop.com and it's telling me i have ie6 when i know i have ie8. some sites like centpoker.com won't even let me view the proper site. i'm stumped. i'm sure it's somehow related to when i uninstalled ad-aware.

You can try running System File Checker to see if there are any
system files either corrupted or missing.

Open a command prompt and type:
    C:\sfc /scannow

Use System File Checker To Repair Windows Vista System Files | Windows Vista for Beginners:

    Maybe reinstall Adaware?
