My laptop's CD/DVD drive just started acting funny. It will play audio CDs just fine, but DVDs fail to load and are not recognized. Has anyone ever had this problem?

Dell's Tech Support is insisting that I replace the drive for $60.65, which leads me to my next question: can I just buy an internal CD/DVD drive from Best Buy and install it myself or do I need to go through Dell since it's a laptop?

have a look in device manager
    start>
    control panel>
    system>
    hardware tab>
    device manager button>

    also any ! X or ?

also whats the information against the CD/DVD drive listed as ???

you may just need to reload the audio driver from the dell website - using your tag number

    has it ever worked

I assume it does not play video DVD's at all ?

How old is the drive, because they really don't last very long?

I know the 710 is an external USB device (I have the 810), but is the CRX830E (your internal combo drive) and the generic drive the same device? You should have only the Sony listed (besides the USB device).

Try deleting the generic device from Device Manager and rebooting. It's rare that the Sony you have fails.

    Courtney sends.

The Sony is an external DVD burner. I'm assuming the Generic drive is the one inside the laptop.
