Were there any HP DV9000 laptops that had a good run of boards?

My son has an HP DV9000 computer with dual hard disks that just died totally. It won't turn on, no lights. To be clear, it is as though it has no power whatsoever.

It's been sitting in a cabinet for a few years as he can't bring himself to through it out.

I know the HP DV series computers were plagued with runs of boards and it seems I read something somewhere that said the bad and good boards could be identified by chipset.

So, here's my question: Is that true? And if it is true, where can I find information on distinguishing the good and bad boards?
