Another problem with my computer stuff....

This time it's my External Hard Drive. When i plug it into the computer, literally nothing happens. It's not like the computer does not recognise it, it doesn't even show up on the safely remove, "My computer" and Device Manager.

The light is also flashing, Help would be greatly appreciated/

Are there lights on the external case? Can you hear the HD spin up?
It's not unusual for the case electronics to die and the HD to still be functioning.
Remove the drive from the case and attach it directly to the computer to see if it's still working.

The next step is to remove it from the case and attach it directly.

You could try it on another machine or call Tech support at WD, but my experience suggests you're out of luck.
Chkdsk won't prevent a drive from starting.

hmm.. I've done both and you're right I doubt Tech Support would fix it even though it is for backup. So what would be inside the external?? Would it be an inbuilt USB controller??

    There's a drive controller.
Mostly, you need to get the drive out of the case to see if it still works.
Do it carefully and they'll never know.

Are you sure it will work with my external? I've heard some hard drives of the same WD company won't let it happen cos with some fixed USb controller...

Open it up and take a look. I know some drives have proprietary connectors, but that will be easy to determine once it's open.
