    Hi,

All manner of odd things happening to my laptop. I'll post a bunch of info and let me know what else you need.

    System:
    acer Aspire 5672WLMi
    Intel Core Duo T2300 (1.66 GHz, 677 MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache)
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 up to 512MB HyperMemory
    120GB 5400rpm SATA HDD
    2GB DDR (support dual-channel)

    Problem
Various different types of XP crashes when doing all sorts of different things, at startup, gaming, photoshop, idle, physically moving laptop. Usually get the dark blue screen saying windows has encountered a problem and is shutting down to protect data etc. Upon restart I allow the disk check to run. On the latest one this message was shown:

\system volume information\-restore{C174DC80-D03B-4FB1-AE2D-E56D3A107BCF}\RP261\A0032581.INI is cross linked on allocation unit 131300.
    Cross link resolved by copying.

Sometimes (like now) XP then fires up ok, sometimes it doesn't and sometimes it does but I get the 'windows has recovered from a serious error' popup. Invariably though a crash happens again at some point.

AVG scan (not in safe mode) produced no results. Internet Cleanup scan produced some spyware results which were all cleaned successfully. Problem is still occuring post the clean. I haven't run a registry fix. If a HijackThis log is needed can someone post the link to a safe source to download it (I'm having enough trouble with downloading a dodgy copy!).

    Thanx as always gang!

    Quick update.

Another crash. Same message re closing to protect. On restart I skipped the Disk Check and windows couldn't boot. Black screen with following message:

Windows could not start because of an error in the software. Please report this problem as: Load needed DLLs for HAL

Another crash. This time dosk check was allowed to run as in first post. This time the following message was shown:

    Unrecoverable error in folder \Program files\Allume Systems\Internet Cleanup 5.0\Updates\PIP.
Convert file to folder (y/n)? Yes

System booted up ok but am waiting for the next crash ... I figure I have about 10 mins.

    Hi,

Will do the HJT log now. Have just bought and run RegCure and it found 1358 errors on the first sweep. All fixed and another 300 or so on the second sweep. Have now run it about 6 times an am getting the all clear. No crashes now for 1 hour ....

    Log to follow ....

    Download and Run HijackThis
    Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
    • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    • Click on Install.
    • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

    Hiya,

Ok, I wasn't too sure what you meant by 'flush' but I think that meant to turn off system restore and turn it back on again to delete previous restore points so that's what I did using the manual steps in that article.

(I have also run an AVG virus scan in safe mode now and no threats were found).

    what's next boss? :)

    Update:

Another crash ... again shut down to protect me. This time it said error was bad_pool_header. Damn this is nasty.

Whatever it is has also now taken out my Pro gaming rig too. :(
