Avoid AVG Free Edition 2011 because it's gotten very bloated, it now contains a registry cleaner(dangerous!), and it's caused problems with the 64-bit version of Windows 7. (y)

Download and install the free Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0.657.0 which is small and very user-friendly. (y)

ahh, fair enough, the one I have installed is very light and doesn't have any dreaded registry cleaner, ill avoid installing any newer version

Here is the list of the current version of AVG Free Edition (10.0.1382) and its previous versions:

You must be using an older version 8 or 9. The registry cleaner was integrated into version 10

Right now, the most effective free AV solution is probably Avira.

It all depends on what you're after.
I like Avast, but the reasons I like avast are exactly the reasons it would be wrong for many people. It depends on you and your machine.

In terms of how many system resources the Antivirus consumes MSE is probably the lightest, followed closely by Avira. Avast is somewhat heavier, though still nowhere near the bloat of many other AVs.

MSE is also the simplest antivirus to use; it has a nice clean interface and doesn't give you all manner of decisions that you have to make.
Avast is the opposite, having a number of additional security features such as network shields, boot time scans, and sandboxes. It gives the user enough control to say which he/she wants to run and how. For example I've turned off the P2P and IM shields because I don't use any programs in those categories anyway. Avast also has the eccentric habit of talking audibly to you when it does something, though this can fortunately also be turned off.
Again Avira is somewhere in the middle.

So as I've said it depends on you. If you've got a lower end computer and just want an AV that keeps out of sight while it keeps you safe, go for MSE. If you want a fancy option that gives you more control, go for Avast. And if you want a bit of both go for Avira.

These run on my XP box. They should run on Vista, and Windows 7 they might run: Windows 7 is in Beta as of today 1-10-2009

    Anti-virus:
    Avira Antiver: http://www.free-av.de/en/index.html

Maximum PC gave Avira an 8 out of 10 rating which is the top rating for Free Anti-virus. Based on this rating I downloaded and have been running it, it is good so far. http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/protect_your_pc_from_guys_like_this
